Since my engineering ability begins and ends at making a tower out of Lego, there was nothing at Stoneleigh that was ever going to inspire me to buy and build a kit car. However, I did have lots of fun wandering around and looking at the various cars on show in the halls and in the club carparks.

My main thoughts were that I was really impressed with the Lancia Stratos (Hawk?) cars in the full rally replica livery (I love the OTT Rally spec look and until recently had an Evo VI Tommy Makinen Edition in full Marlboro works livery.. chav?? moi?)

I also was really taken with the Ferrari Dino cars in one of the main exhibition halls (www.dehavillandmotorcompany) which was a bit of a surprise because don't really "get" the idea of spending a lot of money to make an MR2 look like something that might vaguely resemble a modern Ferrari-ish and I have the same giggle as everyone else when an MR2 based F40 appears on ebay. I did find myself smirking inside when I was looking at the plastic engine bay inserts and pretendy big-disks brakes on the more modern replicas, not to mention the mildly embarrassing rattles when they started up the engines.... but the Dino.... hmmmmmm I liked that!! Funnily enough there was about 10 Porsche Speedster replicas in the club carpark and they also had that air of retro class as well so maybe it is a retro-thing that appeals to me.

Oh yeah... and the beach buggies!! I want a beach buggy!!

Anyone else see anything that they liked the look of?

Yes Jim that Ultima Evo. Can't believe the price of a turnkey car.

Not finished my Ultima as yet but already thinking of a Cobra build also, and oddly I like the Dino replicas too

Jim, I'm with you on the Stratos, they are so outrageous looking (in a good way) and I'd have one in a minute if I had the time to build something else. The only surprising thing is that no one has put anything really powerful in one... Not that I noticed anyway, so I could be wrong there.

I did not go this year, however a couple of years ago I was impressed with the Ford GT40 replicas that were on display.

I am with you on the Dino. I was lucky enough to get a few rides in one when I was a teenager and the car was new. It felt fast when compared to father's Mk 1 Ford Cortina.

Those replicas looked the best I have seen, but I would want a better finish to the bodywork than on the GTB and I would want a V6 engine.

Nothing else really rocked my boat. The GD T70 is too cramped inside but a hard top cobra could get me interested at some point in the furture........maybe.

Alloy monocoque GT40 for me they are a step up in terms of build, and done right are quite astonishing.

And not one of them with equal shut lines anywhere, it is a shame, I like the speedster.

ETS I also like the look of the Stratos but that rear chassis and suspension set-up is horrible.

I look at the pipework on that thing and all my structural engineering scream that the angles are all wrong. Triangles.... that meet and join. ref: ultima chassis.

Perhaps, I am no way fit to judge from a chassis engineering point of view, however I am pretty sure my driving style would rarely put me in a position where 'bendyness' would be an issue smile
