Think my lamba packed up on way to stoneleigh while Rodger following me down motorway . Just got new one from states . So just servicing car . Think I've must have been getting blow back in the inlet or is this colour normal ?? Around the inlet ports was expecting it to be white as was using a lot of fuel when lamba blew

Not normal.
Known problem on some SBC with big cam overlap, caused by cruising at low(ish) speeds in top gear.
AKA black death but can't find any threads about it ATM.
Good news is a regular thrashing should keep it at bay.
Lambda is unlikely to cause this though I suppose if ecu defaults to rich running on Lambda fault that could explain unusually sooty blow-back.
