Speaker pods or not?
Discussion
How many have gone with speaker pods in their cars and do they make a difference to the sound?
I have cut my speaker holes in the side panels (same location as factory Evo).
I was planning on using the drain pipe and end cap design that has been used by some other builders but just wanted to get some insight as to whether those that have gone without any pods feel that the sound may have been improved with pods?

I have used DEI boom mat speaker baffles. It is lighter, easy to fix and it is made for this purpose.

They isolate the back of the speaker from other stuff such as cables and dust and they would amortize the echoes.
The negative reviews are maybe from the sound tuning community, who listen their "music" with a lot of bass to a level where you become deaf. In such case, they would probably saturate. I have tested at my normal sound level, a level for the occupants of the car and not people on the street, and I can just feel a vibration of the baffles. Therefore it satisfies my needs.
I have done tests only with the cockpit in my garage, as my car is still in the build process.

Probably same here.
How about getting something like an iPhone 6+ or Android equiv, make a housing for it and build in a charge cable. Toucan then use it for sat nav, various obd diagnostics, lap timer and if you want music just have a pair of bluetooth headphones?
This is exactly what I'm doing. I don't want to install a heavy and bulky standard car hifi system. My solution is a simple Android 7'' tablet with all the flexibility. No need to do a hole in the dashboard, just 3D print of a frame for a 10mm thick solution. The last version of Android can finally use the USB for digital audio output, then everything is now ready. The system is then 100% flexible, can be updated as you want, it is lightweight, it has the best processing power and it is much cheaper than car hifi or car computer. The main functions will be:
- Integrated GPS with Sygic
- OBD II connexion, fully customisable with Torque pro
- Mediaplayer with some GB of music, but this is not the first goal.
With a little bit of research, you find quickly the best software and everything can be configured with a root access.
For the ones who are doing sarcastic comments about the hifi in an Ultima, I disagree with it. I believe that the solution I'm coming with can be customized to specific needs and it will perfectly FIT the Ultima roadtrip oriented and roadtrip2track car that I'm aiming at.
That sounds like a good solution.
I do think you need "something". Last trackday I drove 160 miles to the circuit, did over 160 on track, then another 160 back. Despite me loving the sound of the car, on the way home I just wanted another noise.....
I think if you only do a few road miles, or trailer the car to track, or its track only it's less important. But doing 500 miles in a day, then it's nice to have.

I don't want anything that's going to set off car alarms, just some entertainment if caught in traffic!
No radio or other electronic noisemakers in my GTR. Not only is it not in the spirit of the car, it'll be impossible to hear with any fidelity unless cranked to hearing-damaging volumes. In all likelihood, I'll be wearing earplugs in any case.
All of that said, I rarely listen to music in the car (a complete waste of the Burmester in my MB) regardless of trip length. The occasional bit of NPR or BBC World News, but that's pretty much it.
Time I spend driving is a rare escape for me and I value those moments of peace and quiet when I'm free to let my mind wander and just enjoy the scenery - and the visceral experience of driving, itself.

Always a marmite topic this one
I totally get the no-stereo approach and how folks build & use their cars will have a big impact on whether such frivolities make sense! For me (aeroscreened Can Am), I went the tech route. My car is used for fun road trips (hoons around Wales, Cotswolds, etc) and Euro trips to Le Mans, etc. As such, sat nav and some music is essential.
I have a windows 7 car PC (128GB SSD, Bluetooth, wifi, etc) behind the passenger foot rest, interfaced to a 7" touch screen in a custom made centre console. I have 2 speakers under the dash in a panel that's rivnut'd across the nicely accessible chassis tubes. This keeps them out of the footwell panels and out of sight. Even with an aeroscreen, I can hear the nav & music fine, so I can't see how a GTR would be noisier.
I'm thinking of doing a media re-build, possibly using one of the new Android head units.... I did consider a tablet, but didn't want to have to use headphones. Great to see folks looking at other tech for their cars though
