Thought I'd share a recent mot experience which may be of use to others.

I "failed" my mot on Saturday due to tyres being apparently below the minimum 1.6mm level- they were at1.5mm. I was surprised as they are only 2 months old.

On returning, I noticed the grooves I had been failed on were the outer ones and they didn't have wear bars and were roughly level with the top of the wear bars on the other grooves.

I mentioned this to a friend and he pointed out michelin cups have primary and secondary grooves, and the secondary grooves are designed to wear faster, do not have wear indicators and are not subject to the1.6mm rule.

I did a bit of digging and found info on government websites to support this, so spoke to Kumho who were exceptionally helpful and have provided me with a letter clearly indicating the primary and secondary grooves/tread. Only the primary has to conform to the 1.6mm rule.

Just a heads up for anyone with Kumhos that may encounter this atMOT time.

Cheers

This is not restricted to one make of tyre.
Many modern tyres are of what is known as 'Step tread'. Your MOT tester should be aware of the latest requirements for testing these designs.
Take it back and tell him to check his testers manual.

It us going back with a copy of a letter from Kumho just to ram the point home smile.

Shame as it flew through otherwise.
