I've just had my sixth Facet Red Top fuel pump fail (pity they're not as reliable as my Red Top battery!)
Any suggestions for an alternative pump, with similar dimensions to the cylindrical Facet, that I could use? Holley pumps look similar and get good reviews, but I believe they can be noisy, and similar Mallory pumps appear to be unavailable at the moment, even from Summit Racing.

Pumps should not fail like this even if they are Facert. Have you directed a failed one to try to determine cause? Usually too much crap in it. DO you have any filters before them?

Unfortunately, Facet pumps appear to be "sealed for life". I don't think they can be dismantled. I do have filters and these are always clean. When they do stop pumping, if I give them a good "bash" they usually burst back into life, but this gets a bit tiresome! My car is now 15 years old so maybe the pump failure rate is not as bad as it seems. Incidentally the latest Facet pumps are so called "solid state", they buzz instead of ticking, but they only buzz properly if you have a good 12volts at the pump, any voltage drop and the pumping rate can drop dramatically. I'm looking for something a bit more reliable!

Ah ok that type of pump! Will they run when not connected to the fuel lines? It will not damage them to run dry. Are they connected to a pressure regulator? I have 2 spare carter pumps as used to be supplied by the factory for carb cars. They are noisy though as are pretty much all non diaphragm pumps which yours seem to be. I used them for the LP pumps on my EFI conversion but no longer need them as I have in tank pumps now.

Will have a look in the garage and see if I have my old carter pumps. You are welcome to have them if I can find them!

Mark, Guy (nice to hear from you again!) Thanks for the offer of the Carter pumps. I have no idea what the Carter pumps are like, would they be a direct replacement for the Facets, ie could I mount them in the same position, low on the rear bulkhead? I seem to remember that the factory mounted the Carters on a chassis member to the side of the engine.

Are there any good, quiet alternatives to the Carter pumps? They're reliable but a little noisy!

Hi Mark
Thanks for the photos. Unfortunately I don't think I would be able to fit them in my available space, but thanks for the offer.
(I'm contemplating trying a mechanical pump. I don't think I would notice the drop in power caused by the pump! I do have a fuel switching valve on my car, so could use one mechanical pump but still be able to draw fuel from either tank.

If you have to 'give them a bash' it sounds like there is some kind of poor connection - which I would guess is down to either corrosion or vibration issues. Are they nicely AV mounted?

I suspect the motor brushes are either sticking or are worn out. A clout gets them seated again.

Sounds like they are not fit for purpose.

Does anybody know what HP pump Chevrolet use on their Corvettes? I bet they don't fail regularly.....

Yes the pumps are AV mounted and all external connections are fine. Who remembers the electric SU pumps fitted to early classic Minis? They used to seize up and required a good bash to get them going again, but it meant lying on your back in the road because they were mounted on the rear subframe!

Not only remember them actually stripped and cleaned the points on one only last week. (Frog eye Sprite).

Been there, done that more than once.

Had minis as my first two cars, 850 then a 1000. Insurance too costly as a student to have a Cooper. Can't believe how small they are now!

Thanks for the offer but I've just ordered a Holley to try. (I know they are supposed to be noisy, but I'm sure I'll only hear them at tick over!)
