This is still slightly premature, but I'm beginning to get my engine compartment in order and have been thinking about the LS7 engine installation. Some questions (in no particular order):
  • What are the best lift points for the engine?
  • What are the engine mount torque settings - both mount-to-block and mount-to-chassis?
  • I received a Moroso component (inline filter?) with my oil "stuff", but it's not depicted in any of the bulkhead diagrams I've seen. Where does it go?
  • Where do the various senders (oil temp, oil pressure, water temp) go?
  • Since the speedometer is taking its data from the ECU, should I use the same sender (at the left driveshaft), but simply use the engine loom connection vs. the Ultima one?
  • The engine loom has a single terminal for the brake - does that have anything to do with the pressure sensor (which activates the brake lights) currently connected to the Ultima loom?
  • How much oil is required by the LS7 in the Ultima? On initial fill, how much goes into the engine vs. the dry sump tank?
  • Have I got it correct that the coolant system requires 17 liters of 50/50 mix filled via the swirl pot (with the heater valve open)?
  • Can I trust the component mounting locations specified on the bulkhead layout diagram? I'd hate to have to move anything and wind up with extra holes.
Thanks for the info! I'm sure I'll have more questions as the engine installation gets underway in earnest. Other than the coolant data, I couldn't find any of this documented anywhere.

Hi Ken. I will try to answer some questions

There are some M10 holes in the ends of the heads you can use to attach a crane via chains.

No idea on torque settings but these need an element of common sense. You have built a plane so you probably know what feels right. I would estimate 70ftlbs for both. (I am happy to be corrected).

No idea on the Moroso part.

My oil pressure came from a drilled and tapped fitting I made into the oil way on the back of the engine.

Water temp was from a plug in the back r/h side (looking from behind) of the r/h head. No oil temp in my case.

Use GM ECU for speed on mine.

I ignored brake on ECU

7.5 lit oil in mine. All in via dry sump. First start with plug leads off to build pressure in engine then refit plug leads. Start.

Park car with nose lower than rear (12" would be good) fill via swirl pot. No idea of quantity. I mix a 20 lit drum and use to top up when/if needed.

Mine was a custom build so no idea of diagram placing. I would test fit the engine and check placement and pipe routing before fitting anything.

Sorry no more pictures but I am not at home with car.

Good luck.

Thanks, Paul - very much appreciated!

True, I've got something of a calibrated right arm with respect to torque after all these years, but I always prefer to know the real, book number if at all possible. I'll see what I can chase down for those engine mount fittings and report back here with any info.

From the mists of my mind I seem to recall getting some GM figures for engine torques off the web so a search may yield results...

Good luck

Paul,

Thanks.

A bit of searching indicates 37 ft. lb. for the engine mount to block bolts. The engine mount to chassis bolts I'll just look up in the standard tables based on bolt size.

As a farmer, no bolt can ever be too tight. They only rattle loose....

Thanks for the link!

Here's a similar doc for the LS7: LS7 Torque Specs

Paul,

While I can definitely appreciate the sentiment, especially in steel (until you reach the bolt's shear point), I can see all sorts of ugly things happening by overtightening in aluminum. I'd hate to have to Heli-Coil a brand-new block…
