Dear all

When final fitting the side pods I wonder what the thinking is on drilling a small hole on the underside to allow any trapped water to escape? I know rain water/spray water should not get to that part but if it did it would just lay against the chassis rail etc?

Yes I have these, drilled after the pods were fitted. I don't have measurements or hole sizes to hand. I remember the factory advising to do this and where to put them. From memory there are either 2 or 3 on each side, as well as some drain holes in the battery area through the alloy.

I can try to measure if needed urgently, but otherwise would suggest you check next time you call the factory - as long as you do this before the car is finished there is no urgency.

Hope build is going well still.

Id like to make my car as 'rain proof' as possible. After A thorough soaing Ive applied seals to the access panels under the front clam and replaced the passenger door seals.... Anyone got a pic where these drain holes should be?

I think you gave it a good test at the Summer Silverstone outing...in fact you might find a couple of gallons of water pour out when you drill the holes!

I'll try to get a photo in the morning. It might need a bit of a clean on the underside first.

I suspect most water enters from the gap between the centre section and the rear clam.

It gets under the panel between the engine bay and the side pod area.

Yep agreed that was my thought on the likely route of entry. I don't intend to use in the wet but want to get the drain holes sorted in any case

Yep, plenty of water gets in also when washing the car. Have some drain holes however I still have to sometimes stuff an absorber chamois down the gap in the corner of the engine bay in front of the fuel tank to soak up all the moisture.
James.

A check in the build manual. It may be mentioned in there, perhaps... I'll have a look later.

Two holes about 5mm will do it.
Both about 25-30mm in from the outside and as close to front and back as you can.

I would think most of the water getting in there is from the rear side grills. Certainly is when washing the car.

I took a quick look but didn't find any specific info. It may be in there, but I didn't find it...

I agree with Steve, any water that can reach the fuel tanks will end up in the side pods. I do not have luggage bins in my side pods (they were not an extra when I built my car). Before I drilled the drainage holes there would be litres (no kidding) of water sloshing about in the side pods after an outing in heavy rain, but I was able to bail it out. If you have luggage bins you will not be able to see the water.

Seal up the floor too round the seam to the chassis rails with mastic or similar - spent a long time trying to figure out why everything was getting so wet until we did this and the problem went away
