Improving rear clam opening gap.
Discussion
I disagree Steve and I don't often find much that he post that I disagree with. I have changed to a strut that is 19 inches long at full open, left the mount on the frame as is and moved the mounting hole on the body forward and down the clam now opens at least 80 degrees with no tire rub. The new mounting hole is 2 inches from the bottom of the mounting section and 1 and 3/8 from the front edge. Easier yet take a 19 inch piece of whatever is handy put one end at the mounting point on the frame and move the clam more and more open until it looks just short of vertical mark the panel where the other end of the 19 piece hits drill it and you have a much more easily worked on car. So back to the question - yes you can make it open more than standard as Steve and Lee have done, however if you want it to open even further, you'll need to do as Steve says and trim the bodywork.
If it's standard, remove the struts and open up as far as it'll go, then you'll be able to see if that gives enough room without body trimming - then perhaps follow Lees advice.

Even if this is not enough I suspect trimming 15mm of the glass fibre where it touches the wheel will make a significant difference to the opening angle. You also need to make sure other parts of the body are not going to touch the chassis around the hinge area.If it's standard, remove the struts and open up as far as it'll go, then you'll be able to see if that gives enough room without body trimming - then perhaps follow Lees advice.

Chris Julian (CJulian on PH) if I'm not mistaken had the solution. Could be a video of the thing hidden away on YT somewhere...

Also found something on PH, but certain photos have been removed. There are a couple of the modified front clip: http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=581...
