When my engine and transmission is cold, everything is fine. However, when hot and in neutral with foot off the clutch pedal there is a rumbling noise coming from the rear. If the engine revs are increased to 1500rpm the noise disappears, it also disappears when the clutch pedal is depressed. On a classic Mini, of which I have many, this is a symptom of the clutch thrust bearing needing replacement. Is it the same for the G50 clutch or could it be something else?

The thrust bearing theory seems reasonable other than I'd expect it to be noisy hot or cold.

Does it go away when you lightly press on the clutch ie take up the load on the release bearing but not enough to release the clutch?
If so then I'm with you that it is the release bearing.
