visited my MOT man saturday... he was reluctant to test the car based on my estimate of pre 78 emissions as the sbc is based on 1960's car engines.

he said we are supposed to have documentation that the car isnt tested to 2001 standards(mine regstered 2001) and with the docs it needs cats, emission testing etc etc

after adving its always been tested that way he went ahead after i showed him the sbc designs and dates and did the test and as an experiemnt afterwards we tested emisions and even for 78-86 cars it was way off the scales/

what documentation do you provide to prove the engine is based on a 1960's engine? in 2001 i dont think we had iva did we?

thanks Dom

The emissions my car is tested to is stamped on the V5 but mine was IVA'd in 2011 with a formal engine ID of 1980

Was it a new guy doing the test Dom?
Mine goes to the same local garage each year (as do all my cars) and he says 'oh we only do smoke test on this don't we'.
He is thorough on everything he can check, which I like, but he knows it is probably the most maintained car he see's.

I have a v friendly MOT tester. However he is very thorough and legit. The 1st time I took my car to him he said that the V5 doc should say "smoke test only" as engine is v old. My v5 did not say this.
He did the MOT anyway and passed it no problem. He told me to get in contact with DVLA to query the V5. This I did and with no hassle I was soon furnished with a new V5 saying the correct thing.

My sbc dakar is visual only, but is way within the limit for a pre-cat engine (1995?) as it's running megasquirt.

factory have been very helpful

For all those with SBC it should be visual only but also should be written on your v5 date of first use!! if not it has been missed off and by writing to dvla you will be able to get this added.

Richard as usual has been very helpfull and prompt

Again the reason we all have these cars isnt just ownership but the fantastic support we recieve

Thankyou

Have a look at the front page of the V5C in 3. Special Notes.
Mine has the date of the SVA inspection and says 'Emissions - Visual smoke only'

This was 2004

There are also plenty of sources online where you can find the age of your engine block. Let me know if you can't find the info as I have a number of engine build books with this info.

Never been an issue for me.
The car was originally reg'd with an SBC in 2002.
Now it has an LS in it and the last MOT station (not the usual one that is used to my car) didn't ask me any questions, just carried out the MOT to the prompts on his computer screen.
They definitely didn't shove a probe up the exhaust.

Emissions test?
Computer says NO!

That is what I encountered last MOT. the guy looked at the car and said "I'm going to find nothing wrong here"

These guys know that a car like this is a substantial investment and owners are unlikely to skimp on maintenance.

Hi Guys - just picked up last Can Am SBC from factory (pictures to follow) and was a bit of a struggle to get it through IVA but thanks to Richard and Dave at the factory it got through. The V5 has 2 notes under section 3 - 1. covers kit car stuff & 2. "SVA/IVA cert issued 14 06 2016 emission limit - %CO 4.5; HC 0.12" and so is tested under the old regs https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploa...
and comes under the section "From 1/8/75 and before 1/8/86" and therefore reflects the original block date - sort of as the block is actually 1974 - so hope this helps all you guys struggling with SBC and MOT - the key appears to make sure V5 is updated.
