Just watched this program on C4.

Guy finished, but the winner was a yellow Ultima GTR in the 150mph class.

The aim is to finish in a exact time. 90 miles and you need to finish in less than a second from the set time.

I watched the show. They aaid you were within one hundredth of a second of the target time! Impressive!

How did the car feel at sustained high speed?

The first 8 cars were within 1 second of their target time. I was able to get within 0.0143 seconds of my target time with a speed variance of 0.0010 over the target speed of 150 mph average. The car handles well at speed. I've been working on balance of the aerodynamics for several years, and have now got everything pretty well balanced out. Larger front splitter, and raise the rear wing about 4"
This is a fun race, and we usually have several entrants from Europe come over for it. Anyone interested should research it, and give it a try - you can even run it in a rental car if you want!

The result sheet does not list a navigator name.
Did you run without one and if so how did you map and control your progress?

I didn't notice anybody else in the car, so an even better result if you did it all yourself!

It is worth remembering there is a maximum and minimum speed you are allowed to do to. To get to less than a second from the median time, over a 90 mile run, takes some doing.

Do you just get the one run? When you say you can run a rental car, I take it mean a generic Hertz type rental, not that you can hire a race car for the event?

Congratulations on your win.

I guess you're as well qualified to answer this question as anybody. biggrin

It appeared in the programme that Guy could have went a lot quicker and also sustained a higher average speed than the one he did. Looking in from the outside it would seem as though he `could' have competed in the 160mph class and maybe have been slightly more suited to it than the 150mph?

How hard is it to step up a class that is `only' 10mph faster? Would that additional average speed have to be made up through the narrow section? Or could it have been achieved on the straights?

I'd love to know more about your Aero tweaks too. I t looks like you have a sizeable diffuser. Have you fitted a flat floor too?

I just run the race by myself. I have a laptop on board with a fairly advanced GPS program running which gives me my position, and from that the speed I need to run for the bracket I'm in. From there, its just using the right foot "go" pedal!
You just get one run at it, because there are usually 110 to 150 cars running, and if the race starts on time at 8:00am (which it often doesn't!), it is afternoon by the time the last car has run, and the highway needs to be turned back to the Nevada DOT by mid afternoon for regular traffic.
You can rent a car in Las Vegas, and run the race. In previous years, guys used to rent a Corvette or a Viper, and bring it up and run it. However, I believe now that the car rental companies require you to sign a form stating that you WILL NOT BE PARTICIPATING IN THE NORC EVENT. You can however, rent a sedan and run it in the 95 or 100 mph bracket. Definitely not as much fun as a Corvette or Viper, but new entrants are limited to the lower speeds anyway for the first race they run.

Congrats! Can't understand why Guy didn't use a gps system, counting wheel rotations with expanding tyres seems nuts. Pity the programme didn't show the kit you were using, and a bit more detail on your car!
If you read between the lines I suspect Ford helped pay for the program in conjunction with Radical.
The costs would come out of their advertising budget so they would not want to see Ultima getting too much free publicity.

I didn't realize that Radical was involved in supporting Guy Martin in that race. As far as I can remember, we've only had one Radical attempt to run the race, and it failed to finish because the doors popped open half way down the course. Maybe they should be looking to Ultima to supply them door latches!!!

Ford UK know how much he loves his Transits so they basically sponsor him. On one occasion they didn't give him the deal he wanted so he reached into his own pocket and bought the van himself. Ford reconsidered and gave him the van in the end so he gave it to his sister.

@Rat gtr - well done on the race. I really like the changes you have made to the aero. Do you have a build diary or any additiional photos of the car? I'd love to see more.

WestGTR - I don't have a build diary on the car, but if you go into You Tube and do a search for "Robert Wood Ultima GTR" you'll find some additional videos of the car. Enjoy!

Yep, generic Hertz. That's how my wife and I won the 105mph class at the 2011 SSCC...

You won't be able to take a car above the 110mph class without installing harnesses and the like, but even at "only" 110 it's an eye-opening experience!
