hi
has anyone worked out which door rams are more suited yo the Ultima doors as im sick of passengers slamming the door when they shut it

All the other cars ive been in recently Enzo , lambo, maclaren and even Rdical you have to pull the door down rather than pull and oh!!!!! it just slams shut as the door is too heavy for the ram>

any ideas please?

Dom I got my rams from SGS Engineering, http://www.sgs-engineering.com/gas-struts If you take the ram off the spec should be printed on the body, the length and how many nm of pressure. You could spec a higher pressure but then you might have the effect of slamming the door open! I did ask for the last 10% of travel to be dampened like OEM struts on Lambos etc but they couldn't for some reason do it. I'm still looking into door actuators controlled by the alarm fob...

I had an email discussion with http://www.industrialgassprings.com/ a while ago about oil damped gas springs.

I wanted them for the rear clam through as I am petrified that one day I would go to open the rear clam, let it slip and have it snap open; break the struts and have the whole lot fall backward onto the tarmac...
I figured that having the last 100mm of travel oil damped would be a benefit.

They can pretty much build any config of strut, they gave me an approximate cost:

Please see our price breaks below for a bespoke spring design incorporating 100mm of damping (p/n T.B.C.)

Quantity Unit Price (each net)
1-4 £74.40
5-14 £57.15
15+ £45.78

I don't see why a shorter door strut would be much different in cost, clearly a group buy would be a good idea..

i bought adjustable gas struts from sgs . they work fairly well but I agree dampening is the way forward...maybe a solution is to have two that oppose each other with are weighted.

Dom would be great to hear about your feedback from Richard :-)

Has anyone considered 'helper' springs that would provide a small amount of resistance to close the last part of the way. Would also help lift the door up a short distance when opened. Might look at this post-IVA.

I think also the door catch mech doesn't help here, it needs a certain amount of force to latch the second stage of the lock.
an auto latch like those on an Audi A8 would be a smart idea but I suspect too big for the space in the door.

Plenty of space in the 'B' pillar so move the latch there and just have the pin on the door.
Then have remote locking, remote open and perhaps a release button under the mirror as on TVRs.

I have remote opening and locking, but cannot see a way of fitting the mech to B pillar in such a way that it would stick out enough for a striker pin on the door.
