Wasnt happy with running the heater hoses, connections, and my (heater)cock in the side pods...

So, I got everything out on the table, then I took the nuts off the hose clamps and stood there with my cock in one hand, and scratching my nuts with the other before I had a brainwave.

I decided I'd put my cock in the gap between the tank and the side pods, and ran the cable thru the side pods, and the heater hoses under the side pods. I wrapped the heater hoses so they dont transfer heat to the side pods, brake line or wiring loom.

Hopefully my cock is well protected here and doesnt get blown off when my chassis explodes. I must admit that I'm getting a bit paranoid about my exploding chassis now, especially now my cock is not protected by the side pods... I may just get myself a tiny wok to cover my cock.

As you can see I've also wrapped my coolant pipes...its damn hot in Hong Kong so I need to do all I can to keep heat out of the cabin. I know the factory says this is naughty but I feel that the alloy LS engine is gonna dissipate heat quicker than an SB...I must admit that no calcs have been done - this is just a feeling.

Jeff-texas, you'll be happy to know that the foam I have used in this application is not the same as the one I used in the chassis - this one only explodes when the car rolls, even without fire and even though its not in a steel tube. Hope the heat doesnt build up too much inside the coolant pipes and blow the foam off the outside before I roll it!!!

Hell, more pictures I can't see (even when right clicking and saving)! Still probably best not to!

Anyway, I insulated all my pipes and have been running happily for the past two years so don't worry too much about it! Will you be able to service you cock if needed in that position

I've just done somthing similar, but used a 12v solinoid, as the heater is either on or off, I don't think I ever had the valve half open on my GTR....
But am only running the feed pipe from the engine, as the return pipe from the heater is now plumbed to the returning rad pipe at the front on the drivers side.
So only needed to fit one pipe under the Laugage container.. and now have a button to operate the heater on/off.

I certainly hope your cock doesn't get hit by flying rivets. No one likes a leaky cock.

I remember last time I had a leaky cock.... it was VERY painful... I read your post just before going to bed, and I must say, I was so worried about the chassis exploding in the garage last night that I couldnt sleep. In desperation, I went back down to the garage, ripped my cock out of my car, played with it a bit, then took it back up to my house and sat on it all night. It was very uncomfortable as the particular model I have is very hard.

When I woke this morning, I immediately reached for my cock (as one is want to) but couldnt find the bloody thing anywhere. My girlfriend told me I had been a real pain in the ass with my cock and hasd been tossing all night.

So anyway, Im searching everywhere for my cock, even checked the dog kennel cos he always steals stuff and I was worried he may have chewed the end off it. My girlfriend was in stiches as I walked around the house looking for it....It was sort of one of those moments when you lose your sunglasses only to find them on your head.... somehow during the night I'd rolled off my cock and it had stuck itself to my forehead. You can imagine how I felt!!

After a sleepless night of worrying about a leaky cock from flying rivets, I woke this morning with a glorious vision. So, in this state of morning glory I got straight onto the computer came up with the solution.

Now we can all sleep safely!!!

...and I'm gonna be RICH.

Brilliant story about your cock - I had tears running down my face.

My cock is under the dash in the centre so at anytime both myself and my wife can get hold of it (yes it is that big!)and move it to the correct position.

Looking forward to your next installment.

I also wrapped my heater hoses, their entire length in the side tubs and under the dash. My HEATER VALVE is in the engine compartment, floats freely on a short length of rubber hose near the water pump. Cable connects to it back there.

Good humor in this thread, however I'm now extremely concerned for your well being while your sitting around all those exploding rivets!!

Concerning the diagram submitted above: truely a brilliant idea. I say this because I've had the same thought while retrieving a silicone "heater valve" from a "sensitive area" (I work in an emergency department). If these artificial "heater valves" had a leash and a flange they wouldn't get "lost".

Like a dick head? ;-)

I’d worry more about your ability to reach your cock whilst you drive, not whether it will explode. Last night, your honey told me it hasn’t "exploded" in years.

Just kidding... :-)

But please remind me of when I said you should be "paranoid" of the materials inside your chassis-pipes being exposed to fire and bursting, rather than it being a small risk?

Anyhow:

I’m planning to route my heater-hoses similarly, except bonding the insulation to the underside of the luggage-bins, alloy side-walls, and the area ahead of the luggage-bins: to let the radiator’s side-pipes and heater hoses vent their heat to the engine-bay, since The Factory recommends venting it instead of insulating it, and because:

It may well get hotter than Hong Kong here in South Texas...even more so in Mexico, and I want maximum cooling on the radiator's pipes to keep the cockpit *and* the engine cool, per The Factory's advice. Nothing like overheating in the desert (no AirCon).

No danger here, and laugh all you want about your own cluelessness as to the material-properties of solids you’ve placed inside closed steel vessels, but we engineers are taught to always err on the side of safety... That’s why we are called engineers, not bodgerers. (not that I'm calling anyone here a "bodgerer" achem ;-) )

Guys, I am feeling a little bit sensitive after the cock thing and the exploding rivets and stuff, so if you if you dont mind I'd rather you stay away from my knob, I dont want you gaggig on it. Jeff touched on my cock above and that was hard enough.

In fact, after Jeff had a go at me for not having an engineering degree, Im now finding it hard everytime I think of him and I feel like its slipping out of my hands. If there's one thing that I regret about not finishing my engineering degree, its that I missed out on all the knob gags in class. Experience counts you know and you can see the difference that a degree makes, I'll bet he did quite a few testies when he was at uni too!

Today is another big day in the workshop, Im going to torque the head, and if Im not happy with it after torquing, Im going to ask one of my engineers to assist me with a head job. In fact, I might just pay him to give me one as I want to spend a bit of time working on my girlfriends grease nipples.

Looks like another busy day on the workbench, working on my girlfriends nipples while an engineer gives me a head job. And they say people who build their own cars are boring!

Rivet.

For what its worth:

I wouldn't wrap the hoses down the side of the side pods. What I did was put an aluminium backed fiberglass heat shield on the side panels and on the inner sides of the luggage containers. The goal is to keep the heat out of the cabin, not to contain it inside the hoses.

Yes, Hong Kong is very hot. I've been there q few times. I haven't yet run my Ultima through a full summer, but here in Minneapolis we get to 38-42C and very high humidity, so its probably not tha different to Hong ong on those days. Even last Autumn, I had a few days where I got stuck in traffic and the heat was getting high... The car only cools down when the engine RPM are up and there is meaningful airflow over the radiator.

It also occured to me that heat kept inside the coolant ends up in hotter air coming out of the radiator, which flows back over the windshield and through the vents into the engine bay... I don't know how much this would impact things, but again it seems like the best bet is to have the car leak heat at every possible place.

A subject for some debate I guess. I wrapped mine and have no problems, although generally the ambient is never too high. The worst I have seen is around 30DegC in Le Mans, and that was ok coolant wise.

The cooling package should be able to cope (ie Rad and fans), this should not really include the pipework! Anyway how much heat really get rejected in the closed environment of the sidepods? As some have done uprating the fans is probably the best option, and may be running a little rich at idle!

Its all about surface area, and the ability to quickly get heat out of the water and into the air that makes a cooling system work.

Radiators have thin walls and lots of surface area with air passing over it - dragging off the heat...... the pipes are thick walled (compared to radiator and fins), have no air on them anyway and the surface area small.....

I would say very negligible effect on cooling...

If you are looking for the heat culprit... its (obviously) the engine.. SB chevs need cams and timing to get HP, and both of those mean extra heat and in any case its an iron block.

Sorry, cant help plugging the LS... completely biased of course, but Ive had a car with a SB and heat was always an issue.

Just read a post on a GTM forum about foam and was reminded of my old mate Jeff-texas.

I wonder how he got on with his build.

Sorry to be tedious chaps, but any chance of keeping the content above Viz double entendres?

I know some find it amusing (and some not), but there's enough of it in the Pie & Piston as it is!

Ta smile

PS. It's a valve anyway wink
