Grant,

I talked with someone that used the cable shifter that bolted to the shaft that sticks out of the back of the transaxle and was advised to stay far away from it. It was reported as feeling vague and was unreliable. Now that I've seen the photos it is apparent why, the fore/aft cable is not aligned with the direction of shaft movement and the anchors for the cables are a long way from the attachment points on the transaxle shaft.

I agree that this system looks flimsy and like it would have a lot of play, which is the enemy of any shift linkage as play results in sloppy and unreliable shifts.

Id have thought the fore-aft one would not be so much of an issue as the side-side one. The side-side movement (rotation) is very small so I would have thought it to me more sensitive to misalignment, or wear, or give in any part of the system.

There's comments in some of the GTM forums about this (in particular - reverse) and one guy has addressed it by bracing back to the selector shaft (first pic) compared to the stock one (second pic)

Ever since seeing those pics I cant help but think that a pair of solenoids could be used to make a paddle-shift for a G50.

So I wanted to wait until I got the car back to post. In all it shifts pretty well. It's very similiar to the Getrag feel. I had that in the car first. The kit is well designed and Renegade, although very busy, runs a good ship. He went out of his way to help when I had issues. Even trailered the car back 5 hours to meet me.

It's pretty stiff when cold, especially in first and second, and then smooths out after it warms up. I would say after a minute or two of driving it shifts pretty good. The only drawback is the gears are very closely spaced in the pattern. It's akin to having a very short shift kit. It's not hard to tell them apart, and I never have grabbed the wrong gear even on the track, but they are close. I've put together a picture book of the kit, including the interior.

The big question of course, is would I do it again? I think so. It's very clean and tidy, especially the interior. Shifts pretty good, but not excellent. (Transmission is still new though, and I suspect it will only get better.) I suspect it's better than the linkage though and much easier to get right.

tblackey-I see you have the CMS cable shifter. Where did you source the shifting mechanism from? I'm hoping CMS has theirs done soon, but I'll might need to go another direction if they don't get it done in the next few weeks. I was wondering how you like the setup in your car?
Thanks,
Paul

If it works anywhere as good as it looks, you've got a winner there Bill. Since I have a little time, I am waiting for the CMS shifter to see what they come up with...hoping it won't be too much longer.

Is the track-day photo from this weekend? If so, where's the video?

Renegades prodcucts looks pretty cool. But, here we are nearly a month since the last post on this topic. Has anyone heard anything from CMS? I sent them an email and didn't get a response. Are they still in business????? I was told there would be a cable shifter to ship several months ago, but haven't been able to get any kind of update.

There's been a lot of chat on the GTM forum about the shifters too.... http://www.ffcobra.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php/ubb/foru... . . seems like with the release of the GTM these guys are swamped.

I have been talking to the guy who owns the red gtr that is featured in this months complete
kit car magazine...Him and another guy have Auto-bionics......If its a gearshifter that you are after then may be these people can help you out i know that they fabricate everything themselves....there details are in the magazine feature..
I've been using the Auto Bionics design centre cable shifter with a G50/20 6 speed for 18 months now on road and track - keep the linkage well lubricated and it's fine - in fact the overall build quality of the car is superb, with some very clever innovations !

Oh, yes. They are still in business. They are just really busy with their main products (transaxles) and haven't taken a lot of time developing the shifter. I received an email last week asking for some dimensions of clearances with the engine and TA installed. My guess is they are workiing on the levers and cable brackets. I gave them what I had, albeit without headers installed.

Hey all... Scott from Renegade here if you don't mind me dropping my .02!

First of all, much appreciation to Bill for name dropping Renegade with regard to our shifter. We do make a strong, light weight cable shifter that works with the CMS G-50 side shifter conversion.

We are also a dealer for CMS transaxles and have been for many years. It is not uncommon for CMS to get very busy with all the work they are doing and not get back to you. You know what "they" say, if you want it done right, find the busiest person (or company) you know, and they will make it happen. If you need anything regarding transaxles, we have a terrific program for all the Porsche trannies starting from the 914's all the way through to the GT-3's.

Finally, we put together an entire package for many of the GTM customers, GTR customers, serious Lambo replicar customers, some GT-40's, Sakers, and a ton more. We can supply the transaxles with all the trimmings (spray bars, billet sliders, coolers, side shifters, filters, mods, etc.), clutch components from street to anything-but, starters, shift kits, CV's and axles, speedo reluctor rings and pickups, etc. Basically, we put together everything you need at this end of the car...

...and here to see the shifter:

So, that's it for the sales pitch. Now comes a little "wine" with this "cheese!" I am a member on roughly 15 boards and I own one chat board myself. I don't have any time for posting on my own, let alone all the rest. So, if you would like to drop me an email at scott@renegadehybrids.com I would really love to hear from you. If Bill (or someone) forwards another link to me with regard to comments on this thread, I will do my best to drop in again and say "Hi!"

Thanks for allowing me to take up a little reading room on this site. Good luck to all...

Sincerely,
Scott Mann >>> Renegade Hybrids

I talked with Scott tonight regarding his shifter. Sounds like a real winner. Bill-Where did you source your boot and center console? It looks very Porsche-like.

It's the Porsche 996 cover. I used the factory Getrag fiberglass, modified just a bit to fit the shifter. Came out pretty good.

Guys,

Here's some photos of the shifter mechanism from Autobionics for a G50. This is an external modification that converts a G50 to cable shift.

http://www.autobionics.co.uk/

I emailed Steve at Autobionics and this is what he said:

The photos I sent you are not of a completed unit, as it is not anodised, engraved and had it's carbonfibre cover fitted. If you have seen our website you will see that the standards we set for ourselves are high and quality of our products is paramount. The photos, in my opinion, don't reach that level as we still need to "finish" it off. The system works but that simply is not good enough for us, as aesthetics are just as important.
