Don't like the choice of engine. Still I'm looking for an extreme road racer. Looks like more of a street car (not hard against an ultima).

Nice proportions (except for the length).

Still, I'd think the Ultima would be cheaper, and more flexible (as to the build options). Also a bit more extreme.

What is it with british using small capacity v6s?

The Ford Duratec V6 is a superb engine, and when twin-turbocharged in the Noble, produces over 300bhp.

You seem more interested in image than driving. I suggest that a Noble is not the car for you.

Hiya

Please don't take this personally but I've read through serveral threads that you've posted and I'm confused!
Are you looking for an extreme sports car ie. Ultima? Or are you after a very fast GT? ie. 996 Turbo

Both cars are superb bits of kit but very different. In one post you say, (I'm paraphrasing) ..... 'no squeeks or rattles .... wanna cruise at 150mph for many miles .... C5 had crap materials/plastics ..... need refinement ....'
Then we get 'the Ultima is more bad assed than the Noble .... looking for extreme road racer etc.

I think you should consider a porker turbo/CL00 Merc/SLR Mclaren or such like. The Ult will blow your mind with it's performance but do your head in if you want refinement.

Like I said, nothing personal, just confused! And I'm the one who is infamous for changing his mind!

I'm with Paul on this one.... an Ultima is anything but refined.

I can and do live with my Ultima every day, not that I use it every day it just gets used for going to work on a rainy day or going for a sunny blast at the weekend.

It is really hard to describe the performance as it will re-define most peoples idea of fast cars, (it did me) even a Noble doesn't come close (I love Nobles as well by the way). You really need to experience it to fully appreciate what 7 seconds from 0-100mph really means

In essence I think if you could live with a lotus elise then you would love an Ultima.

I'm not looking for anything practical. Doesn't need windows, stereo etc.

Please don't say I'm into anything for image, I'm not. I told you, I'm not interested in building it myself. That doesn't make me a poser.

I was just asking for honest opinions. Never said the two cars were anywhere near the same level of capabilities.

If I wanted a fast GT car, I'd just get a 993TT.

I NEVER said I want anything refined. That is definately me. I know what the Ultima is. It's closer to an F1 car (if your've modded it nicely) than your slightly modded street car. I know it's a brute, raw, and that's why I'd want one. I will track it, and there's a chance it will be my daily driver (besides my bike).

I'm getting into this for the right reasons...

Well, the very first time I saw a picture of the Ultima GTR was when I was driving a 2000 C5. The thing that caught my attention was the GTR's rear-end (Butt). I really disliked the rear-end of the Corvette when I first saw it in 1997. All of a sudden, "the butt began to grow on me" and I "learned" how to appreciate the Butt of the C5.

Ironically, now I think that the butt of the C5 is the nicest part of the body - go figure!

When I saw the GTR for the first time, its rear-end reminded me of the C5's rear-end. So, I initially rejected the GTR. I kept looking at the car and several months later "the butt began to grow on me again". Go figure! Now, I think the rear is the nicest part of the GTR.

But!

I now like the overall look and proportionality of the GTR MUCH better than the C5! Go figure! All of a sudden the GTR (strictly in terms of looks) is pulling waaaay ahead of my feelings about the C5 - go figure yet again!

Funny how that happens - a car that you totally reject as being ugly turns out to be VERY sexy in your eyes just several months down the road. Now, I don't think that there is a sexier "looking" true sports car that is street legal anywhere with on exception. I think that the McClaren F1 is just about as sexy as the GTR.

As far as engines go - I totally agree! I would NOT want to put a clunker inside the GTR - nor - would I want to place a "weak" powerplant inside this gem. This car deserves a VERY good powerplant/transmission set-up and NOTHING less IMO. Anything less than 500hp is a total and complete shame for this car - she deserves so much more. So, yes - I think the engine selection is rather weak and should not require further "tuning" to get it up to speed.

Why else are so many people looking to "upgrade" their engine AFTER they purchase the car? It is because people recognize that this vehicle deserves more power than a mere 300, or 400, ponies.

A GTR between 700-1000 ponies will do just fine for me. But making that set-up "street-able" as a daily driver is going to be the challenge. But THAT is the whole point - I actually will want to "drive" this car more than just on the weekends. So, sound-proofing and floor covering (ie, "refining" the car) will be of utmost importance. Yet - at the very same time - a day at the track pulling 9 second 1/4's and running to top speeds in excess of 220 mph is STILL a major desire.

So, yes - I am looking for ways to improve the "refinement" (i.e., make the cockpit more comfortable for longer trips) - but not at the expense of "performance". Indeed, I want both and the GTR seems to have the "potential" to do both.

Am I looking for a Lincoln Towncar ride? Of course, not. Nor am I looking for a slamming Rock Concert all the way to Las Vegas from San Francisco and back again - I think not.

Therefore, I need to get "creative" and engineer a good noise cancellation solution for this car - given what I am hearing about how "noisy" it really is.

I am NOT expected a C5 experience. Rather a “mellow” F1 experience that I can tolerate for a 600 mile round trip when necessary and not feel like I’ve just driven across the Iraqi desert in an M1 Abrams.

I have spent a sometime riding around in a Can-Am with Dave at last years kitcar show in Carlisle P.A. Now Can-Am's are supposed to be noisier then GTR's, I must say I had absolutely no problem with its noise level. The only thing I can think of was its performance was so brilliant that it made me forget about the noise. All I can say is I intend to buy one. I would have already but earlier this year I was under the imppression I would not be able to bring it into the country. I now know differently but have invested a substantial amount in an investment property and need to get more funds. So it looks like late next year will be when I order.

P.S. By the way thank you Ed for letting us borrow your car.

You will find the Ultima more Abrams than Mellow but a good pair of ear muffs will help. A 600 mile round trip is OK for the driver but less so the passenger, especially female ones who want to chat (l refer you back to ear muffs).
BTW, what is all this "go figure" stuff?
