Not to sure A.G, but he did flat spot his front tyres... OOPS. So deceleration was not good. How's your Disc's ? The little nutter that was doing most of the driving, finaly set a New world record at the end of it. 0 to 100 to 0 in 11.24 sec's was 11.4, in the R500. He was more entertaining than anyone else. The twin Turbo V12 2 door Merc came back in with the brakes on fire, had to send him back out to cool them down. Damn he could drive.

Errr.... think we were supposed to keep the times quiet, although it wasn't implicity said.
Didn't check the flying mile, but I expect the time to be one of the fastest even if the top speed isn't! There were a lot of cars there with over 500bhp..... one even had over 1000bhp but I think we should maintain the surprise.
My best time was a 0-100 only time as I only had limited runs (loads of other cars to test) and on that one I wasn't sure I had hit 100 so didn't hit the brakes.
I have to warn you though I was crap on the brakes as All I kept doing was locking them up on the slippery concrete surface, I actually flat spotted one of my tyres. More practice clearly needed!
After this I now have huge respect for the caterhams R500 brakes they are truly awsome for a non ABS car.

Did you get a bo77ocking for the noisy pipes. It was the subject of discussion between the marshals at the security gates as I was leaving. (With my seriously cooked brakes) I brought the Brabus CV8.
It wasn't my car that was the problem but a yellow one with no silencers that was off the scale
incedentally that car wasn't allowed to run on the next day, so contrary to what people say there is a noise limit at Bruntingthorpe and they do have monitors.

er.. correct me if I'm wrong, but I didn't think ABS helped you brake any quicker - merely saved the driver having to use a cadence braking technique to avoid locking the wheels... if anything ABS increases stopping distances...

ABS primary function is to retain steering control under braking. However - if the surface is poor and the car would otherwise enter a slide then ABS does, in fact, reduce real world stopping distances as I understand it.
The reasoning being that once traction is broken the car will slide and braking has no effect - until traction is regained. If you don't lose traction in the first place...then you maximise the amount of braking possible on any particular surface.
I suppose in theory an excellent driver could reproduce its effect with cadence braking but it seems hugely unlikely to me...

On the subject of ABS..
If the surface is really bad, ie gravel.
Then ABS increases stopping distances significantly.
This was a major problem here in OZ in earlier ABS equipped cars.
Youll find that all the local cars now actually allow some initial lock up to minimise braking distances on loose surfaces.

Well done Andy - it's nice to see the Zonda beaten especially since Le Mans when Nick had problems with his sports whilst chasing one. You say you need more practice on the brakes but what was your start like - is there any room for improvement there? I have heard 0-60 figure of 3.3 seconds quoted for Ultimas on more than one occasion, but is that a relistic target to aim for?
More practice and nore rear bias needed on the brakes front..... my car is harder to set up as it has the older style factory big brake set up and the calipers front rear are not the same size.
The newer AP set uses the same calipers front and rear so it is quite easy to obtain the 60/40 bias. My front tyres also seem to need a lot of heat before they start to work well (which they never really got on the day), but I will need new ones anyway so it's not really a problem anymore!
Anyone know of an effective brake set up method that doesn't involve locking the wheels on the road to see which ones break first. I really want to know how much work the rears are doing now compared to the front at the moment to see how far they are out.
On the acceleration front, I recon theres another half a second in the 0-100mph time and all of that will be in the 0-60mph as I had to drop the launch rpm down by 1000rpm due to the lack of traction on the concrete.
You have to remember though that all the cars were tested on the same surface so the times are comparable, maybe I could drop half sec but so might the Zonda so its all relative.
Also worth noting I was changing gear into second on the 0-60 bash to maximise the 0-100 time if I was doing a 0-60 only time I could just let it rev a little higher as it does 59mph in first gear on the 7000rpm rev limit.
On the day I tried changing into third for maximum power band and also staying in second to remove a gear change, and from the times on the day it seemed to remove around half a second from the times.
Edited to add .... Holding 2nd gear that is that seemed to be quicker by half a second.
