For a while I've been trying to decide what I want as my own 'super car' (only custom race cars apply here).

I don't know, I just keep coming back to the Ultima. I think it's that ass. I've heard one can be put together for say 60k, which just within my budget.

It would be a daily driver. I've asked about rear vision and that was fine, but how about reverse parking, and paying at the toll booth (do you simply open the door, stand up and throw the money in?). This wouldn't be a problem at parking stations, as I can drive right under the boom gate

I need my music, and was wondering what sort of hifi system could you throw in. I'd imagine not much

Finally, I've seen a 'thing' on the windows of some pics. Are you able to put a hatch (window opening or whatever you want to call it) on the window? Air con to me smells and feels like tinned air.

Doc, how's the insurance in Aus?

Doc, one more Q. How much are you budgeting? I get the feeling it'll probally end up costing me clse to 80-90k by the time I'm done. I guess great value when you consider that it's still cheaper than a Boxster S or M3.

Italiano,

Im still waiting for a quote from Shannons with regards insurance.

Im budgeting 90k. But will happily spend more.
Always remember....speed costs, so how fast do you want to go?

Italiano,

BTW, if you reckon you want one now...wait till you actually see one "in the flesh".

Very few cars have the presence of a GTR.At any price.

Still building mine but have heard all the comments about how loud (and pleasant) the engine noise can be in the cockpit.
I am installing a radio and a standard set of speakers in the sides of the footwell. This will be fine if stationary but will not cope at speed so I am installing an intercom system as used on motorcycles. I have fitted the speakers and boom mic to some ear defenders (yellow to match the body colour).
The benefits are the radio volume half mutes when you speak to your passenger and mutes completely when you use either your mobile phone or a two-way radio. The system has VOX which will open the transmit function of the radio as soon as you start to talk.

The things in the window are ‘Helicopter Vents’ they are clear plastic and clip into a hole in the window. They can be pushed out at about 45 degrees as a scoop. They can be twisted to point forward to scoop air in or pointed rearward to cause a venturi and suck air out.

Do not consider not fitting the aircon.
There are many posts you can look at on this subject. As a generalisation (preparestobeshotdowninflames) those who don’t fit it say it’s not right for a race derived car. This may be so but will IMHO have an impact on its resale value.

Do you want a GTR or Can-am..... if a GTR ya need air con.

With a Can-am you could throw your money out without opening your door at the tolls

I have also fitted a Stereo in my can-am and can now hear it comfortably at 70mph without it being turned up high beacause I have now fitted a very quite exhaust and sound deadening. The stereo is just a head unit ans a pair of speaker.

I would expect a GTR with the same stereo exhaust and sound deadening to be even quieter.

Don't be put off these cars don't have to be stripped out racers and can be made civilised and still perform (mine does).

GTRmannen, I know what I want, and that's an extreme street car. I doesn't bother me that it won't have the creature comforts of a luxury sedan.

My Qs were mainly directed to how easy it is to cope with day to day (will be daily driver).

As to reverse parking, I'm sure that'd be fine. For the tolls, I'll open my door. For the hifi, I guess I can put in an mp3 system with a few speakers. Obviously will only be a small system, but I'm sure it can be done.

Like I said, creature comforts don't really matter much, my daily ride right now is a bike.

I don't think I'll be able to insure it. Not at my age.

Doc, is that figure $AU or $US?

Would be a GTR.

Italiano,

Thats $AU...and if you plan it as a daily driver then you probably wont get insurance.

I will chase up Shannons and find out but I was planning a limited mileage (8000 kms per year) policy.

This will keep my premium as low as possible while still allowing plenty of fun (more than 150 kms/week).

Ill let you know how I go with Shannons.
Miraz, I suppose you will also be interested in what I find.

Well I'm expecting to not be able to get insurance. Not worried about theft or crashing into anything, just if some d!ck reverses into it and does a runner. Waiting for the body parts to be shipped here would actually be more of a pain in the ass than if I had to pay for it. I guess that answers whether I really need full comp insurance.

If your happy with that...go for it.

I dont think your budget of $60k Au is even close though
Actually, Ive just looked back at my budget and $90k will get you a kit landed in OZ, No tyres, engine or transaxle and no exhaust system.

Then youve got engineering certification, rego, etc plus stuff you wouldnt think about like lubricants, coolants, spark plugs, gaskets etc.

All up you must be close to $110K AU, if not more.

Are you still interested?

For $60k Au you could get a very well built clubman (PRB, Leitch or Fraser) on the road. Nice, but its no Ultima.

BTW, I know a guy in Sydney who is in the process of registering his Hayabusa powered PRB..he may sell his.
It goes very well, ask Miraz, hes seen it go!

Oh, hes thinking of selling so he can build an Ultima!!

Um, 60k was the US figure, since most members on this forum can relate to US dollars!!!

The parts alone cost something like 45k AU, so I wouldn't think it'd be built, engined and sprayed for 15k

90k (AU$) would be built and sprayed, with a relatively stock engine.

If I was spending 60k AU, I'd spend it on an NSX. They have to be the best bargin at the moment.

Italiano,

If you can build and spray a GTR for $90K AU even with a stock LS1, I would like to place an order today.

Go back and have a look at the Ultima Web Site, write a list of ALL the things you will need to purchase, convert to $AU, add freight, 15% import duty on that figure, and then another 10% GST of the whole lot. If you can get the kit landed in OZ for under about $85k AU, you havent bought all the things you should have.

BTW, Ive looked at sourcing "heaps" of the "options" locally, and believe me, they are NO cheaper locally and you are still not sure if they are 100% suitable for the task at hand.

Im sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but $90K AU is simply not enough.

If you like, email me through my profile and I will email my budget spreadsheet.

Well that's why I'm not gettin one now, I don't really know how much it'll cost. Americans are lucky when it comes to cars, they're so cheap over there. Here, you'd be lucky to see a diablo under 300k (200k US).

I wasn't really factoring in how much more expensive it would be in Aus compared to the states, but then again I'm only looking at the moment.
