Well I was going to come on this forum and ask you guys for advise about building myself an Ultima, but my plans have since evaporated!
I was intending to build the car in my parents garage, but when I told them it would take me at least a year, they have since changed their minds! So that's it! End of dream!

Obviously, building one outside my house is a bad idea, So what about buying second hand? What should I be looking for? What are the main differences (handling, specs etc) between a GTR and a Sport, or a Can-Am and a Spyder?

Thats a shame!

Just about every car is unique. The main differences between the models are ......

Sports & Spider are the previous generation. Some are about with Rover V8 and Renault 'box. The body was the hard part of the build as some fibreglass work was involved. Sports is inclosed and evolved into a very decent car indeed. The Spider was a development of the Sports chassis and lost the roof. No weather gear or full screen is available so tend to be driven by the very brave in bad weather. A Sports without A/C will become very hot indeed.

GTR and Can-am. Another leap forward for the Ultima model line up. It was more evolutionary rather than revolutionary though. With the GTR the big difference was the rear body work. Some have said you would not want to drive a Sports quickly without a wing. This is not the case with the GTR. The inherant lift with the old tear drop rear has been designed out with the re-design. The GTR chassis is very similar to the Sports, but the body is different. The main aims were to make the build easier and make the car more SVA friendly. A Sports will still go through the SVA though with care. Other things like lowered floor and electric mirrors have been intro'd on the GTR with many other small mods.
The Can-am is like the GTR, the next logical step forward for the Spider. Big difference is the ability to fit screen & weather gear. The styling is more like the GTR at the rear too.

Most cars now come with Chevy V8's. A large percentage of these come from American Speed, a US engine supplier that the factory recommend.

Nice to haves ......

AP 12.7 brakes
Air Con
Rear Wing
Aeroquip hoses
Oil Cooler
Stack dash
Leather/Alcantara

Like I said though, every car is different and two cars may have different specs but be equally desirable.

Have a look at the owners site

www.ultimaclub.com

and in the cars for sale section (on the home page) on pistonheads for a good selection of cars for sale.

(Mine is the Red one! Hint, hint)

Good luck

Paul.

Thanks for that info Paul, very helpful indeed! That's one good looking car you have there, sadly out of my price range though! That's why I wanted to build one myself, so I could spread the cost!

So what makes you want to sell yours then Paul?

Worth a try I guess!! Either that or sell my house and move back in with them! Really wish I could build my own though! Maybe I could build one under a Gazebo in my garden
Yellow happens to be my favorite colour for as sports car. I really love the yellow Can-Am with the roof fitted in the Can-Am gallery section of the Ultima web site!
