Does anyone know if F1 style paddle shift technology and launch control has made it's way into the world of Ultimas? I can't help thinknig how much fun a track day would be with a semi auto race box attached to that big Chevy ;-)

Cheers,
Dom.

I think Xtrac does a 6 speed sequential gearbox mated to a paddle shifting system. I have seen it on some WRX rally cars.

I have never seen any genuine F1 semi-automatic gearbox for sale. If anyone seen and know where to purchase one. I would like to check it out...

We haven't had this one for quite a while. I suppose it was about time it popped up again

It all comes down to cost v benefit. This sort of system is going to be reasonably expensive (if you want the full F1 experience that is), and do you think an Ultima really needs an auto box?

If you want to be the "track day king", you should be looking at sequential shift, as that's the more affordable option. You'll also have all of the other track day goers swooning over your car, pointing and speaking in hushed tones

Of course, if you turn up with your fully knobbed up Gucci gearbox (for our American readers, that means high specification and stylish), and then drive like your granny round the track, you might get a few smirks behind your back

Hi

If you have a sequential box on your car there are a large number of solenoid operated gear change systems that are designed for bike gearboxes out there (I have built one my self) that might site your needs. I am presently building a system that also controls the clutch and the engine rpm. However if you are interested I would look in to the systems that are available for bikes and a sequential box and see what you think.

For traction control and launch control there is www.racelogic.co.uk. Havent tried it myself but it is supposed to be very good.

If I am not misstaken the 993 tiptronic system uses a slushbox.

It's somewhat unclear to me but I see two types of sequential systems. Hewland NLT which, as far as I know, would not involve very much electronic gadgetry because you physically change gears through a crash box. Or you have a simular system that involves all the electronic gadgetry that matches engine speed and eliminates the "crash" in the Hewleand sequential. Figuring out the electronics would be a nightmare. Would you not need EFI and electronic throttle control? Hewlands are sooo expensive thou. I thought Quaif might have something?

I like the romance and simplicity of the of crash box sequential. (crossing fingers this doesn't turn into a dead thread)
