I thought it might be an ideal chance to compare your new Dunn mega motor with my new cooking LS7 tongue out (only in a straight line of course cos I'm just one of the old gits)

I'd love to know where you could get a turnkey LS7 for only £8500 when a crate engine is $13000 plus shipping, import tax & VAT. Then you'd need to add ecu, loom, front end bits, air-con compressor, etc.
If you reffering to my post, where did I say 'turnkey'?

your right about $13,000, although I was quoted roughly that including std ECU/loom/etc (no AC).

Shipping is actually really cheap so long as you are not in a hurry, I was looking at $450US insured, Duty is 5% and VAT 17.5% (although I am VAT registered) so a total of some £8,350 all in...

I assumed turnkey as it wouldn't work unless you had all the parts - I'm also assuming you'd want to run the engine & not just have an expensive coffee tablewink . I've yet to see a $13000 crate engine that comes with the ecu, loom, etc, please prove me wrong.

your definition of turnkey is not the same as the generally accepted term....

turnkey means you give your XYZ to sombody, you get it back complete/finnished/etc.

CBA to dig out the paperwork, but there are several official GM outlets for the LS7, they all seem to charge very much the same amount of money for the same 'crate'...

only reason I never progressed this was down to the usual political problem of where could I race the car with this engine....

I'd class turnkey as including everything necessary to install. A standalone engine as you describe I'd class as crate.

Mr Scuffers ...

I've recently purchased a turnkey LS7 for my Ultima, so in that context I do know what turnkey means.

If you were to purchase a crate LS7 for an Ultima then you'd need to purchase additional parts (excluding Ultima factory parts) such as loom, ECU, alternator, air-con, etc. Also modifications such as custom pullies, custom alternator mount, inlet manifold rotated, re-tap for oil sender, etc. are required to fit it into the Ultima's engine bay. I think it right that as these things are required for a turnkey solution they should also be included in the price.

that's not the dictionary definition of the word...

turnkey is defined as being 100% finished, as in job done, or in the context of a car, ready to drive away.

I don't disagree apart from your use of the word turnkey (see above)

the quote I had for the engine included all ancillaries (except AC), yes I also would have to reverse the manifold, but that's hardly rocket science...

Yes, you still need some Ultima specific stuff, but in the context of the prices mentioned for all this (ie. £25K) it would seem a bit excessive…

If it was £25K for the complete installation, done and dusted, (as in proper turnkey job) then £25K does not seem that bad, but what we are talking about here is someway off that..

Anyway, each to their own….

I believe £25k was for changing an existing SBC installation to LS7 which includes many factory items. For a 'turnkey' engine (which is everything minus factory supplied items) you're looking at around £14k for 625-650HP, or around £12.5-13k for 560HP.

I'd still love to know where you'd get a turnkey LS7 for £8000, even if it doesn't have the air-con compressor - are we really comparing apples to apples?

Darren,

Guess as much, just tryng ot get my head round what factory parts can add up to ~£11K...

I was looking to bolt mine to a Hewland NLT, and the cost to have the bellhousing manufactured (this was before they were avaliable off the shelf), a flywheel/clutch/bearing etc etc was nothing like £11K (and remeber, most of this would have been one-off work.)

Just seems to be like somebody is talking the piss a little... Makes a very cheap (and decent) LS7 upgrade look un-realistically expencive in the context.

Ask the factory to mail you the LS7 parts price list - you'll soon see where all that hard earned goes!
