Ultima in Belcar

Jo Hemelsoet takes a look at a unique Ultima racing in Europe

This season two Ultimas GTR are competing in the Belgian Belcar GT Championship. The cars are built by Eric Qvick who previously developed and raced the famous M3 engined Mini S3. For this new venture, Qvick Racing have teamed up with Belgium Racing and the drivers line-up consists of Eric Qvick-Christophe Geoffroy and Peter Theuws-Patrick Derdaele.

The liberal technical regulations of Belcar allow competitors to use any components of a given manufacturer, a rule that can obviously be stretched to the maximum in the case of kit-cars.

Instead of following the traditional Chevy V8 route though, Qvick Racing have opted for a new approach. Given their vast experience with BMW racing (the Qvick Mini won the TB class in the 2002 Zolder 24 Hours), the engine choice for the Belgian Ultima was the M3 straight six.

The 3.2 litre engine delivers in excess of 400 bhp in race trim, sending power to the wheels trough a Hewland sequential six-speed gearbox. The body work has also been revised with the addition of some aerodynamic modifications, the most obvious being the extension of the rear body work section.

Though fitting the 6 pot BMW engine may seem a bit odd given the mighty V8 also available, it makes the Ultima GTR eligible for the GTB class. This means that on the one hand competition from the leading GTA class Vipers, Porsches 996 BiTurbo, Corvette C5R and Stealth will be avoided, while on the other hand podium chances in its own GTB class will definitely be enhanced.

At the opening race at Zolder three weeks ago only the Theuws-Derdaele car (joined on this occasion by Geoffroy) appeared on the start grid. Without any testing at all, the Ultima GTR performed surprisingly well, realizing 4th quickest lap time in GTB class during the race and more importantly, finishing its first ever race. Final result was a modest 20th overall but then Belcar races have a duration of 125 minutes! According to the team, the remaining Porsches GT3 and Gilet Vertigo should prepare for some serious battle in GTB class once all teething problems will be solved.

How serious Qvick-Derdaele are about their Ultima GTR project is reflected by their intention to enter the cars in the upcoming FIA GT Spa 24 Hours, probably an Ultima first.

Pete Claridge at Master Motorsports was going to develop a long tail - he will be interested to see this one here. Anybody fancy it for a road car? Looks better than I imagined but I wonder whether the rear hinge facility works? Presumably the racer has a rear cover that lifts off completely.

It's not really a longtail though as it just appears to be an extension to the top edge of the rear clip?

The porsche 917 long tail was only the top side they didn't bother with sides at all.

I have always liked the look of the 917, and have looked into the kit. By the time you have built a half decent Porsche 3.6 TT engine, you will have spent the best part of £12k, and even then you will never close to 'that sound' that you get from Uncle Chevy.

Although I didn't like the short tail with no sides, it has grown on me. It has a much more purposefull poise which screams 'racing'

Don't forget that the 917 that we have seen so far is actually the 'short-tail' although the rear clip has the extended lip on it.

Here is what the 'longtail' looks like. I can't see the factory going into production with it somehow although it is beautiful.

And as for that Scooby -Doo paint job

Does anybody know the name of the team running the Stealth or if they have a webpage?

I found a picture of it on the Belcarworld web page but couldn't make out the team? Did some searches for Bardahl and came up with sprint car racing!

I wonder how different the engine mounting points are? V-8 to I-6

The version in the larger pic, is the long tail I was refering to. When John Wier took over the 917 Le Mans Project in 1971 he realised the stability problems it had, and while at a test day they fabricated the longer tail with ally panels, and it made a huge improvment. So then they just moulded a new rear like we now know.

Simon what year car was the other photo, must have been a later version, not so well known.

I see what you mean, but without wishing to sound pedantic, that 917 has considerably more to the 'longtail' than just adding a lip to the trailing edge of the rear clip like the Belcar.

The stealth is run by Laurent Van Moerkerke according to my program from last weekend. It looks like a driver-entered car. It’s listed as a Stealth B6 Mk 1. Mighty fine it looked and sounded too.

I’ve been to both Belcar rounds so far this year and it really is superb racing with 40 car plus grids. Both Ultimas were running last weekend although only the 32 car finished. Unfortunately due to my poor French and the fact that there were GT cars zipping past at 3000 Db every 30 secs I didn’t get to hear what place it finished in! Last time I saw the no 33 Ultima it was running round with a wing end plate hanging off and tyre marks up the side of the bodywork so it was obviously involved in some argy bargey at some point.

I like the rear body section / wing... Looks very like an old Group C car now.. With enclosed wing ends that must produce alot of downforce now...
