Morning chaps,

So, Rachael and I were driving back from KL to Singapore last night when I got stopped after the last toll booth, before the Tuas checkpoint, and told I had been speeding a few km back.

Obviously I was offered the opportunity to make it go away but we were basically out of Ringit at that point so I had to take the summons.

So, it says I have to be in court on 31/08/12.

However, I think the copper was mumbling something about paying R$600 in JB in the next week to sort it...

Now, (I haven't told you yet) Rachael and I are moving to the US in August, thus I won't be here for that court date. The ticket also has my EP number and car number plate on it but (if we ever drive to Malaysia again) I will never have either of those again, so I am guessing they couldn't identify me.

Do I ignore it or do I head to JB at the weekend and pay (I don't want to)?

And, out of interest, how on Earth do they know what speed I was doing and have my number plate? I didn't see any cameras/ cars and was shown no evidence! Is this just a trap thing to make money? Can I ask for evidence etc just to annoy them and slow it all down?

If I ignore it; are they going to hang me if I ever fly into KLIA?

Your thoughts and advice would be appreciated, chappies!

hmm, i have never actually had a "real" speeding ticket in Malaysia so not sure!

Did you give them a Singapore or a UK drivers License?

They usually have a camera set up (often in central reservation) a few KM up the road.

No, I'm not sure I know anyone who has actually had a 'real' speeding ticket!

I'm blaming Rachael for spending all my cash wink

I didn't give them either driving license... I claimed I left it at home and that was initially a bit of a 'problem' but because I "talked to him nicely" he "let me off" having to produce a license!

I guess they must have had a camera but being that I was in traffic all the way (albeit speeding traffic) - they didn't seem to be pulling many people over!

shall I scan the ticket and put it up? It really doesn't say much at all to be honest...

You need to pay it otherwise who ever brings the car in next time will have a problem. You do not need to go to court and you can get arunner to pay it for you if you don't want to go, the computor records in malysia are actually very good.

How they know is the guy stands with the gun, and radio's your number up ahead.

Not quit a speeding fine but similer, I bought a bike of a mate, and he had been in Thailand with it and not brought it out correctly, when I took it in there was a fine, and it had to be paid at the Betong entry point which was 200 km from where I was trying to ctoss, a bit of discussion and proved that i did not own the bije at the time of the fine, andthe fine was halved and paid there, all with a receipt, but I had to pay to clear the computor. (The guy I bought it ooff was behind me and I told him to shut up as if they realised he was the guy who commited the offence he would have had to do the 400 Km round trip to pay at the original entry point.

Actually i seem to recall [last time i was doing my Singapore parking fines paperbag, i think you can pay Malaysian Traffic fines at AXS stations in Singapore.

Give it a week then put the car reg in and see what spits out!

Thanks chaps, some good info there!

I think the guy said it had to be paid this week in JB (so not really out of the way) but I have no idea where (police station?) or how and the ticket doesn't say much but I assume that's what you do to avoid court...

Will give it a few days and check the AXS machine thingy and see if it's there. If not, maybe I'll take a lazy Saturday afternoon drive up or something?!

the car is a company lease, not a company car, so it wouldn't go to a coleague, if that makes sense but I don't want to leave someone else in the st. I just can't believe a guy got us with a gun and had the time to write down the plate, or his mate had time to write it down (hence why I guessed they had a computer/ camera) as we were shifting and in traffic!

It's far from the end of the world, it's just the lack of instructions that is frustrating! Note to self - bring more cash!

The temptation is strong to do this...

Having Googled for various threads on paying Malaysian fines, pretty much every single one is saying don't bother! Worst case scenario, carry the summons and the right amount in cash with you in case you ever got stopped again...

I would feel bad of the next user/ owner had trouble though, so I found this website (others don't seem to work) that should allow you to pay, except it says my car registration has no summons against it, though I guess it may not have been entered into the system yet.

https://www.rilek.com.my/pdrm/csresult.php

Will keep an eye on that and maybe check the AXS machine and if nothing shows up before I leave, well I can only assume it got lost in the system somewhere!?!

hehe i suspect that "always carry enough Kopi Money" is not one of their normal recommendations wink

To be fair though, for future reference and for any one else referring to this thread, id you are in a Singapore Registered car, DO NOT BREAK THE SPEED LIMIT between Senai and Tuas Checkpoint (other than the actual bridge).

sometimes there is a camera trap around Melaka, but otherwise it is cops in cars, keep an eye out, don't take the piss and have RM50 on standby!

I would tend to agree not to pay if you where staying, and take achance, but yuo'll just cause trouble for the next guy, bit purverse that we are saying don't pay if you are staying, but that's the way it is.
They just radio the number plate, and the could be anywhere back to the next junction, so in addition to what John says do not speed on the secitions with very few junctions,as thye have plenty of time to radio ahead,
They do it on the ganting road on a Sunday, they sit at the bottom of th hill and pull you in to the rest area, about 10 km down the road.

Thanks for the thoughts, chaps!

Still no summons showing on the system but will continue to check for the next few days.

Someone suggested that the guys who stop you don't always submit them as they lose face for not extracting some money from you but that doesn't make a huge amount of sense to me. To be honest, I did actually have RM100 on me and it sounds like that would have been 'enough' but I had never done the special handshake before and couldn't really understand what he was banging on about! Plus, he seemed to be talking about RM600, which sounded like a lot...

RM600 does sound like a lot!! how fast were you going??

Normally RM50, occasionally if close to Hari Raya or another bug festival holiday it has been RM100, i guess they need to buy some food as well as coffee on those occasions!

50 Rm for John because he is a local, normal rates are 20 Rm Malay, 50Rm Chinese 100 Rm European.
I've heared of the summons not being put in, don't think it is due to loss of face, just can't be bothered, you may be lucky.
best way to deal with it is to say, 'Oh sorry, what do I do? is this the same systemas Francce do I pay now at the road side'. Then if you do get the honest one (or maybe there are two) you havn't offered a bribe.

Localised wink

I just leave RM50 visible on the center console and let the bloke make the offer, they are usually not shy!

not like the last time i got pulled and the Singaporean chap in the lambo in front just opened the window enough to get his hand out and stuffed a fist full of notes at the copper then was gone in a wheelspin ...

RM600 is bks.

On a single trip up north a few months ago I was photographed twice - one at 129km/h and another one at 195km/h. The fine for both was the same: RM300. I therefore figured that if one is going to speed, one may as well speed properly.

One of the great freedoms in Malaysia is driving at whatever speed you want to (when conditions allow, of course). Just pay the relatively low fines and carry on - no points, no jail. It really is a great country to own a quickish car. I've had blasts to Singapore where for good long stretches with very little traffic, the needle never drops below 220km/h.

Yeah, perhaps it wasn't RM600 but that's what I thought I heard and repeated to him! Like I said, couldn't really understand what he was banging on about, hence why I never took the opportunity to sort the pay-off...

I was doing 137kph in a 110, so not horrendous compared to what I've heard before. That feels quite fast over there but I guess that is only around 90mph?!

Actually surprised they did you for 137, I always think anything below 140 and they wont stop you unless its a holiday time and they want money. I think that they only road you'd be done for 137 and then only in a sing car.

That is just my luck...

Still no summons showing here: https://www.rilek.com.my/pdrm/csform2.php

Need to find a bill pay machine this weekend and check that!

Rachael may drive her and a mate up next weekend, so I'd rather they didn't get stopped!
