For the record, I used hotel connections - Wifi or wired (with a little mini Wifi router I bought before I went out). I seem to remember that I used a mixture of Psiphon and VyprVPN. Psiphon (freebie) worked perfectly though.
WeChat worked brilliantly for video calls although it's a PITA to save your chats if you want to.
Things seem to change by the week though and this was over a year ago!
