Not there now, but intending at some time in the next 4 or 5 years to return for a few years. Lived for a few years previously in Saghami Ohno (half way down the Odakyu line) 30 mins out of Tokyo. Was working in Ginza and Atsugi City.

Very jealous of you guys out there irked have a Asahi Super Dry for me.....

Fabulous experience, return visit most years to catch up with friends/ ex-collegues and/or business (this has mostly been Osaka/Hiroshima)

For those of you who have a chance of living there - don't think about it - JFDI....

GINZA, ATSUGI, thats Nissan isnt it? or is that just a co-incidence
Iv been to the plant as my ex Boss works at Nissan, I was at NETC in Cranfield and Zona Franka in Barcelona under him.
I just met him while I was in Japan, they seem to be OK as a company but I guess theyv had their share of cutbacks recently already.

Hi guys, new to PH, but not new to Japan.
I've been here since '91, in and around Tokyo.
Since I got a family I thought it time to get a reasonable car,
a family car as it were, so my only and daily driver is an MG Midget.rolleyes
Life is good.

How is life in Tokyo? I'd love to see some of the (il)legal street racing while there but I guess this would be hard to find!

What else should we get up to in Tokyo then? We'll be staying at this Tokyo Inn Shinbashi Atagoyama.

I was in Japan briefly recently and saw a yellow spike thing that sat underneath cars to prevent them being driven away from a parking space. If anybody knows who makes these I would like to get in touch with the company (I saw it from a car and couldn't get out to have a look).

Life over here is very interesting with stacks of odd stuff to see. You are staying in a very up-market part of town and will get to know the subway system quite well!

Things to see:
Shops in Ginza
Neon and chaos in Shibuya and Shinjuku (inc Karaoke)
Expats misbehaving in Roppongi
Art Exhibition at the top of the Mori tower
Electronics and gadgets at Akihabara (and some very dodgy geeky stuff wink )
Odaiba and the huge Toyota showroom
River boat ride
Madness and fashion in Harajuku

That is a small selection of what Tokyo has to offer!

Roppongi is the main nightlife area that caters for the ex-pat city boys of all nationalities. Has a large collection of "hostess" clubs and late night bars that are meat-markets for J-women and western blokes.

Oh - and gentlemen of African origin who whisper at you "Titty bar?" as you walk up the street.

Lots of places still don't let Gaijin in so I understand that we really never get to see the really fun venues.....

Guess where we'll be heading then!

So just out of interest what's the average cost of a night out in that region? Assuming of course that we'll be having the occasional shandy

I found Tokyo much cheaper than UK for a night out - though that was at 230 Yen to the Pound.

159 Yen to the £ will make a slight difference then!

Tokyo CAN be cheaper than UK to go out - but Roppongi is not one of those places!

Beer in an expat bar is Y950-1000/pint
Food is Y800-1500/dish depending on what you want and the type of establishment.
Hostess bars have cover charges - Y5-7k for 30-60mins is not uncommon, drinks on top.
Some bars, particularly if they have live music or a good view will charge a seating fee - Y3k and upwards on a Friday or Saturday night.

It is very easy to demolish Y15k - Y20k on a good night out if you are going for it!

wavey Hi - Yokohama is only just up the railway tracks from me.

No regular meets - I have met up with a few other PH'ers that have been passing through. There is a brit expat meetup group on meetup.com which is worthwhile but you will be staying the night in Tokyo after that one drunk (or overnight in an internet cafe....)

As for car export back to the UK? Do your sums very carefully as I don't beleive the numbers stack up at Y150 ish to the GBP.

Glen, you know you want to bring me back a new Nissan Cube (although they are launching a European spec one here soon).
