Did a load of research on TV's last year in advance of a purchase in January this year. Even looked at the charts for viewing distance/TV size, and so went and got a 50" Plasma and love it.

Thing is, watching now, we feel we could still have gone even bigger. I've had a look at the 2011 model range on the Panasonic website but everything over 50" seems to be 3D. We don't want 3D, so am I reading something wrong or is that really true?

Model advice please for over 50" Panasonic 2D telly. Current one is a G20.

Even if you don't want the 3D aspect, the panels are amazing. Try a VT30. I've got a few G20s and love them, but the VT30 is noticeably better. 55 or 65 inch available.

Mark, what distance are you sitting from the tv? Just curious as i can't decide between 50" or 55".

To be fair though the larger sizes logically suit 3D better so on the off chance you sit down to watch a half decent film you won't regret going for a 55" or larger should it suit you?

Yup, did exactly the same here, could definitely have bought something closer to 60" (but probably not for £699)

3D is like electric windows in a car; more or less a default feature (in the larger sizes.)

At max about 12 feet. So the charts I saw said 50" would be ok, but on the out limit. The picture is great - just needs to be bigger biggrin

Go for the 55" you won't regret it.

I'll take a look at the VT's cheers.

I wondered of that would be the case - Just seems like a lot more expense for something I'd never use. Bit like a radio in the play cars.

Interestingly though I drove a vehicle last night with window winders where the switch should be. An interesting experience, especially as it came off in my hand as I was remembering how to use such an item.

Well at that distance I'd tentatively suggest you were a bit of a plum for not choosing a 55" or greater wink I'm only sitting 2 meters away. Having seen the stand for these things I'm a tad disappointed how far from the wall they leave the screen. Bad design imo. Unfortunately I can't wall mount. Purchasing a 55" would be more about future-proofing methinks.

A plum indeed Digger, couldn't agree more. As I said 50" is minimum for 12 feet, but I was pushing the boundaries with the wife anyway who was angling for a 46" (plenty big enough). 50" was the compromise.

Funnily enough though, it was she who fist said 50" looked a bit small.

I may sneakily move the chair forward a few inches each week until out toes touch the telly biggrin

If you do decide to upgrade, please give me a shout, as I have been looking for a 50g20 for a while now (staying away from Ebay) and there is nothing about.

Cheers

Had a projector when we used the room downstairs. The new 'home cinema' upstairs doesn't really lend itself to that I don't think.

So far about 40% of potential customers have uttered the immortal phrase
"I don't want/need 3D Mate" , and after a demo of 3D i'd say over half are blown away by it, and the other half grudgingly accept it's interesting!

The VT30 has the best picture quality i've seen since the late and much lamented Pioneer Kuro Plasma sets, (not surprising really as Panasonic basically are using the Pioneer technology in the GT/VT series sets)

I don't know if I'm a special case wink but after a prolonged 3D demo I got a splitting headache, so it's moot whether I find it interesting or not. Thankfully it can be switched off and isn't compulsory.

And to OP, 50" is small, but then as a former projector owner you should have known that...133" (2.35:1) from 12'is starting to seem small to me. smile

The quality of 3D content appears to be improving dramatically in both stored and transmitted arenas.

Recent broadcasts of the Wimbledon finals were excellent.

I have just bought a GT30 42", and the picture is stunning, I looked at a few panels and in my opinion the Panny Plasmas are way ahead in terms of picture quality. I would have liked a Vt30 but just a bit to expensive for me at this time but I am delighted with the GT30. It has 3 d on it and when I demod it in the shop I was well impressed but for me it was the 2d performance that made me buy it.
