And to OP, 50" is small, but then as a former projector owner you should have known that...133" (2.35:1) from 12'is starting to seem small to me.
But the projector was older and we only ran movies through it via a laptop. I really should look in to the new ones I suppose. i.e. do they show TV, are they noisy with fans etc?
Any links?

They start from £400-500 upto tens of thousands, so it depends on budget really. For comparison the one I'm using was just over £3k when new, but can now be bought from Richer Sounds for £1,800 at the moment. I added an external video processor to mine which has given it a new lease of life and allowed technically 'perfect' calibration. The difference between my setup and the lastest JVCs was so slight that I didn't think it was worth the £5K or so upgrade cost (as said above 3D gave me a massive headache anyway and 2D wasn't £5k better IMHO).
Couple of links:

Now reduced to £1,700, JVC HD350:

Just be aware that picture quality of a projector is highly room dependant: Having a fully darkened room is only half the story as if it has light walls and ceiling then the image will washed out and look grey rather than black. You can get special screens which help, but they cost more than the JVC did at launch.
Steer well clear of the Gt50 Panasonic, looks to be amazing, was very impressed at first. But.. Contrast changes constantly and have had green patches. Returned for new one had exact same problems have now given up on them (very sad as i'm a big Panasonic fan) swapped it for a 55 Sony - watch this space

Just out of interest, is 3D on tellies better than it is in cinemas? I find the latter particularly loathsome, and will always choose the 2D option if it's available.
Get a bigger telly, or support it on your belly. How exactly is getting a bigger telly at home going to make 3D in cinemas any less crap?
My mate has a 60" LG Plasma - I'd have never thought my 50" Panasonic would feel small!
I work for a department store that is a Panasonic authorised dealer - not that impressed with 3DTV to be honest. Even on our demo 55" screen it feels like you're watching a film inside a large golffish bowl as the edges are too obvious.

Thanks for the info. Certainly some food for thought there. My budget will most definitely be less than tens of thousands

I had a 50" pioneer in my living room and when I upgraded the the 60" pioneer I decided to move the 50" to my computer room, viewing distance took a bit of a hit, I have to look around when I'm gaming now
I know what you mean about 3D, seems every decent sized set has to have it, I've never felt the need and don't want it, and the speed the technology is moving it seems as if there will be something new along soon to blow the existing sets into the past, very off putting.
