Hi all. I have a Samsung TV (a 3D one) which I have had about a year (its not one of the new Smart ones)

But it does have a 'app' section and claims to be an internet tv. Does anyone know how to actually get on the internet with it?

I have all the apps like youtube etc, but I just haven't a clue how to get it online to Google for instance!

Anyone know how to do it?

Either buy a WiFi dongle for it or plug in an Ethernet cable for starters.

Cheers guys, I've read the manual and it looks like the basic apps are as far as I can go with it, rather than an actual browser.

The best way to get the internet looks to be a lead from my macbook!

No browser I don't think. I only use iPlayer and YouTube. Wish they would make an app for 4OD and ITVplayer.

BTW There's an app for the iPhone to control the TV. The keyboard on the iphone makes the TV YouTube app more useable.

Full browser only on D series models so sadly you'll only have the apps at present.

Their DVD players seem to have the same smart hub, so that's a cheaper route than replacing the TV.

Cheers guys, I'm now trying to think of a way to connect the Macbook to the TV with this 'All Share' facility to see if I can get the screen of the Macbook on the TV

Apple TV is brilliant at what if does. Doesn't actually let you get on the Internet as requested though.

Personally, I hate all these widgets, gidgets and tat built into the TV. They date very quickly, and so I would always plug a small Asus, mac mini or similar into an HDMI input and use a nice wireless keyboard to get all the functionality and upgradability you would ever need

so, am currently wavering between

1) Smart TV with wifi, either built in or dongle, and a drive plugged into the back of it, use the TV wifi to connect to my router.

2) TV with a media streamer, possibly Doobox or WD plus a drive plugged into Doobox, and use the wifi or cable and connect to network that way.

I too hate things that have millions of bits and doodahs added as once one element goes wrong the whole thing can be completely buggered. Which would suggest option 2)

However option 1) has advantage fewer power cables and leads.

So?

Boxee Box, that's what I was thinking of when writing doobox.

Doh!

Seriously though, my thought is something like a Boxee or WD media streamer is going to be able to deal with a lot more file types than whatever Samsung or Panasonic put into their TV.
