I don't like this idea.
The whole advantage of Sonos for me as an installer is that Sonos sits on its own wifi not eating great hunks of data capacity out of your existing wifi network.
The bridge is still going to be available for the time being, and I will be using it on all installs that need it. Don't get hung up on this, you can still just plug in any Sonos devise onto the network and it will provide access to the whole of the rest of the sonos network.
It is just away of selling more boxes, simplifying the set up process so they can sell more boxes.

Agree entirely. The Bridge and the fact that Sonos uses it's own mesh network was one of it's key benefits. The whole advantage of Sonos for me as an installer is that Sonos sits on its own wifi not eating great hunks of data capacity out of your existing wifi network.

DIY installers might now buy more boxes as they will see them as cheaper, but will find them less reliable than Sonos has been in the past and so I would guess will be less likely to add on in the future, as a huge number of people do at the moment.
I can see why they have done it, but think it's a dangerous move

For anyone deliberating on whether to buy a sonos speaker, I can honestly say its been the best value item I've bought in the last 3 years. Used everyday, so simple and versatile with a spotify account and a whole load of radio stations to choose from.

I'd second that I've just bought and had installed a Sonos system. Playbar, Sub (managed to get one in gloss black), 2 x Plays 1 for the front room, a Play 3 for the kitchen and a Play 1 for the bedroom with a Bridge Boost.
Very impressed with it so far, really impressed with the sound from the Play 1's. I would def recommend it.

I knew this 'use the house wifi' idea was a bad one.
House of twenty sonos bits of kit and we have been having network issues, but as soon as the blighters drop off the network they switch to wifi, then when the network comes back they seem to be causing all sorts of loop back issues.
A call into Sonos tomorrow me thinks.

I just replaced a Play 5 in the Bedroom with a pair of Play 1's, stereo pair. Massive improvement, sounds far richer. Play 5 is now in the office and sounds flat.
I really don't understand this - I've seen full stereo setups in 3 shops, 2 with the sub and I was quite surprised how crap they sounded, thin and weedy, lacking in any depth.Your post is not the first time I've heard this said about stereo Play 1's, I just don't understand why in my experience they have been so disappointing. Maybe its the shop environment, but even if it is, why would I buy on the strength of them sounding crap, in the hope they sound good at home.
I have my connect on the front of about 3.5-4k's worth of amp and speakers, which in most peoples eyes will probably mean I have different expectations. - yes that's true, but expectations don't cloud a side by side comparison, and every time i've compared 2 play 1's with a Play 5, the Play 5 had wiped the floor with the Play 1's.
My son had one of the the play 5s on tonight when I walked in and I stood and listened for a few mins to its nice rounded sound.
