uh oh - Sonos Play:1 - I can hear my wallet weeping...
Discussion
Not wanting to start a seperate thread, the wife has asked for a DAB radio for Xmas. Now we only need something fo the kitchen so was initially looking at a Ruark R1, my mum has the large one with. Iphone/pod dock but the R1 has Bluetooth so can play music that way.
Would I be right in thinking that a Sonus Play 1 can also via the App on each of our iPhones play music via wireless and or radio from the iphone, or do you control the Sonus which links to the wireless network in the house?
Any advice taken!

I really don't understand this - I've seen full stereo setups in 3 shops, 2 with the sub and I was quite surprised how crap they sounded, thin and weedy, lacking in any depth.
Your post is not the first time I've heard this said about stereo Play 1's, I just don't understand why in my experience they have been so disappointing. Maybe its the shop environment, but even if it is, why would I buy on the strength of them sounding crap, in the hope they sound good at home.
I have my connect on the front of about 3.5-4k's worth of amp and speakers, which in most peoples eyes will probably mean I have different expectations. - yes that's true, but expectations don't cloud a side by side comparison, and every time i've compared 2 play 1's with a Play 5, the Play 5 had wiped the floor with the Play 1's.
My son had one of the the play 5s on tonight when I walked in and I stood and listened for a few mins to its nice rounded sound.
So you like the 5?
Guess it depends on the room,,...
I'm going to pair the 1s

the App can be hooked up to radio and spotify, then you can literally play any music or radio you want, if sonos can see it, you can play it.Would I be right in thinking that a Sonus Play 1 can also via the App on each of our iPhones play music via wireless and or radio from the iphone, or do you control the Sonus which links to the wireless network in the house?

All sonos Play series work in the same way, get that and a bridge (bridge might be cheaper off eBay), then plug bridge into router, the Play 1s can go anywhere as long as its in range, then start playing music.
That is it, you can go for NAS system or something else, but that is up to you, spotify and radio work well for OH and she doesn't use the NAS.
Ok thanks, so I need a bridge to link it all together! I have just moved to BT Infinity so should be getting a "free" router from them, God knows how good it will be.
The other option was a Philips micro sound system, only issue is its port is USB or Apple Lightening (our phones are 4 and 4s)!

No, you don't need the bridge anymore.
So can I plug into the mains (not connect an ethanet cable) and it will link up to house wireless network? As well as iPhones etc! Thanks.Evening all. Does anyone know if Sonos are likely either to replace or upgrade their range any time soon or start allowing discounting?
We invested in a Playbar and while the sound isn't fantastic we love it's networking features and would love to expand this into other rooms but Sonos products are fairly dear - which is putting us off taking the plunge further.
Anyone have any knowledge of future products or pricing strategies?
Many thanks.

Bit of a curve ball here.

HK are doing their Play 1 and 3 equivalents, the Omni 10 and 20. The appear to be very similar and at the same price point but trying to find a single review or comparison is a fking nightmare. Anyone happened to pick one of these up? I'd like to hear about the sound differences.

One of my suppliers is the main HK dealer in the uk, so let me see what I can dig out.http://www.harmankardon.co.uk/hk-omni-uk/brand_har...

There maybe a few launch deals kicking around as well. Their Connect pricing is over half the price of sonos version, paired with a good amp it should be a viable alternative.

If anyone needs a bridge, I have 6 or 7 I bought so I dont have to rely on house wifi's on my installs.
For larger installs, relying on house wifi is a flippin stupid idea.

Vex, I have done quite a few installs now using the house WiFi and have not experienced any problems. For larger installs, relying on house wifi is a flippin stupid idea.

The houses have BT infinity installed with the BT wireless switched off, then i installed an Apple airport extreme as the main router with Apple airport expresses for range boosting. Never had a problem plus the client gets full WiFi signal throughout the house.
I also practice this method in my own place and again never had an issue, even with 2 teenage kids with Xbox/ipad/iphones etc.

Vex, if your can spare me some time regarding my choice of wired system in my house. Currently I have 2 squeezebox boom units in my dining area and one bedroom. Initially I was unimpressed with the UI but the use of the Logitech phone app has changed all that. What I want to do is add wifi capability to my existing stereo in the living area. At present I have a yamaha z7 and MA rx6 speakers. Initially I was thinking of the sonos route but because the logitechs were working fine then the sonos system for me is a waste of money. I am thinking now of using a squeezebox duet for my living room area. I know Logitech no longer make or support these system but I think it would work better. However, having read this thread you have thrown a bit of a spanner in the works with the HK stuff. Do you know if this would also work? At present I was going to use napster for music streaming but but this is not set in stone. Any help would be appreciated in this AV/wifi/music minefield..... Lol
