sheesh, thats an odd outcome. I suspect some dodgy positioning.
The playbar really isn't very good for music and thats quite widely thought. The Play 5 for me is the best and the Play 1 and 3 sound awful and tinny. If anything the play 5 can be a bit warm dependent on the surface it is put on.

I know lots of people swear by the Play 1, but in shop listening (prior to buying my Play 5's), to me, sounds like a 1970's pocket transistor radio. I have 3 play 5's and a connect, but currently considering a play 1 for the summerhouse in the garden on the grounds that it surely can't sound as bad as it does in the shops and that the fanboys are right.
You really need to listen to a pair of stereo Play 1's at home. I have two 5's in separate rooms now swapped out for two pairs of 1's. Far better sonically primarily because of the stereo separation but bass and clarity are as good if not better than a Single 5.
again going back to the shops I've heard 1 play 1's and a sub and it still sounded Sh*t in comparison with the play 5 (even despite the Stereo aspect.) I really must try to hear them somewhere better, as people keep saying the Play 1s are good, and they can't all be wrong. Just that so far I have been overwhelmingly disapointed with them in shops. I've listened to them in 3 Richer stores, Comet + Currys, Seveneoaks Audio and a dedicated Sonos/Bose shop in Halifax and never found them even coming close to a Play 5. something is definitely going on and i don't know what. Its deffo not my ears as they are pretty good and used to reasonable medium level hifi (amp & speakers 3.5k) so if something sounds bad I know it. the only explanation is positioning in every shop, or other people are just plain 'wrong'. i'm begining to think its the shops.

The Play:1s seem fairly position dependant. We have one in the bedroom that gets moved around due to cleaning - it can sound different when placed away from the wall and on different furniture. Sometimes it seems tinny, other times quite impressive.

How does the Connect:amp compare? would I benefit significantly from just using a Connect and separate amp? I am in no way an audiophile, so not after concert hall quality sound.

weigh up the costs... do you have an existing system that you have the following with:

1) Crap Amplifier that needs replacing.
2) Good amplifier so only need the access to the NAS/Spotify?

Its much of a muchness, already have a good existing system then add the connect, if you are thinking of upgrading, looks at the costs of the new amp against the Sonos one.

Go to Richer sounds and ask them for a go in the music room.

the simple connect is an expensive way to go for 'background' music especially if you are buying amp and speakers. The Connect Amp would probably be the best option if you are considering buying an amp and don't want any other things connected.

If you have a reasonable existing system (amp + speakers) the connect is more than worth considering, bearing in mind the connect is cheaper than a stereo pair of Play 1's

I have an aging mini/midi? system. I've disconnected the CD player/ tape deck half, leaving the tuner/amp half. This is now starting to misbehave, but the speakers are still good. Only lasted 15 years, shoddy Japanese rubbish!

Had a quick listen in RS to Sonos for the first time yesterday: the speakers were just sat on shelves, but I thought the play:1 sounded good for a small one, the play:5 pretty good but was underwhelmed by the play:3.
The soundbar went well with two play:1's in their demo room for film too....obviously paired with the sub.

We are a few months off really sorting things out (a sunroom extension was the impetus for this, that won't be started until Aug-Sep), so I'll still be seeking good deals later in they ear: the Spain thing looks interesting, do we not get charged VAT on goods bought from Spain? (I'll obviously give RS the chance to cut a fair deal too!!)

I have added a Play 1 to my collection and now have a Play 3 and a Play 1, will also get another play 1 and when required will pair them up for parties etc.

A point was made earlier that you can play separate music on each speaker, so for example my daughter could use her Ipod and play her music and I could play different music on the Play 3 downstairs? is this easy to do?

I thought someone would have answered by now.

Very very easy.

Settings > Add a Sonos Component then follow the prompts there, pressing the Mute and Plus on your new Sonos component.

Then they should be available in the Rooms menu. You can change the name of any of the speakers under Manage > Room Settings to a pre-existing name, or a custom name. You can also setup Stereo Pairs to as and when you need to put both speakers in the same room.

very easy - also one thing the Sonos can do is play from different sources at the same time. - not something the competitors can do.

Bit confused by the question, as Sonos by automatically lets you play different music sources on different speakers. It just happens (ie you pick a music sounds for one speaker, it plays, you go to the next speaker and have to select a music source - which can be totally different).

Have you setup all the speakers separately rather than adding each subsequent speaker to the system?

Sounds like you have and Du1point8 tip should sort that out.

In the app you should see all of the speakers listed and be able to pick music for each, group them together (so they play the same music at the same time - the real party piece!), etc..

I recently added a Play 1. It is all easy to use and such a brilliant system.

It showed lounge and dining room and just the Play 3 was playing and you can see this by the equaliser, in this mode I could play different music on each speaker ( brilliant). I then just clicked group and bingo, just showed Lounge + dining room at top of the screen ( on iphone )

Can't wait to get the next play 1 and pair up, I've heard good things about stereo pairs of Play 1's

Well.....we went and got a play:1, 5 & connect.....from Amazon Spain, saved a good wedge against UK prices.....set the 1: & 5: up tonight: what a superb bit of kit!

The 1 fills our kitchen area nicely (6m x 3-4m), the iPad/iPhone app is great, the 5 sounds very capable, & pairing them up a cinch!
We're no audiophiles, but I can see this letting us play all manner of music easily, very happy (as is SWMBO & daughter!)

Only minor issues: we have 2.4 and 5ghz wifi (Virgin media)...generally use the 5 but the Sonos only talks 2.4, so will use that for all devices.....and the Play:1 cable has a 90 degree bend that meant I couldn't use a spare UK 'figure 8' power cable....so used an adapter with the Spanish supplied one.

& we have just discovered the Sonos EU pricing is about to increase - http://blog.sonos.com/news/changes-to-our-european...

The play:1 from there *with* shipping is £20 cheaper than any eBay seller right now....so we have invested in (okay, thrown money away on!) a couple more whilst the going is good....http://www.amazon.es/gp/product/B00FSCNLME

Playbar not such a deal, fleabay cheaper....

Would 2 x Play 1's be a good choice for having one at each side of my TV? Would this be impressive sounding?

Or would 2 x Play 3's be better?

We were decidedly underwhelmed with the Play:3's in comparison with the 1 & 5....I suspect a pair of 1's would work well.....
although they tend to be used more for rears: if you want TV audio linking, you really want the Playbar (optical in). Not that we have one, mind.....but the demo of Playbar + 2 Play:1's was particularly good!

The thing I don't like about the play bar is the colour. Would be better if it came in white to match furniture etc.

Also, with the play bar, would I need a sub? Or is the play bar capable of producing a great overall sound?
