Right- I'll bite!

Got a B&W Zeppelin in the lounge with an iPod Classic full of music on it and a Bluetooth adaptor to the aux-in from Spotify.

Going to eBay both the Zeppelin and iPod and move over to Sonos. Was thinking of starting out with a 3 to replace the Zep and a couple of 1s for the kitchen and daughter's room and then take it from there. After seeing the physical size of the units, I can't help but think that a 5 would be necessary to replace the Zep, anyone got an opinion?

I see the three as a bit redundant to be honest, the new 5 is a much bigger sound than the first gen.

Alternatively I would also consider a pair of play:1's set as a stereo pair, far better paired than as singles

I had the old Play 5 and it was nowhere near the Zep in my opinion, the 3 is even further behind. I haven't heard the new 5, but it is supposed to be much better so I'd look at that as an absolute minimum if you want to get close to the Zep.

Never heard a Zep, but we are more than happy with the quality & output of the Sonos:5.....I would have thought that a fair replacement.

I would agree that the 3 was underwhelming, and actually the 1's are very good for the size (& as many say, even petter paired up - could even be a good option, don't know how loud you like things). Richer Sounds have the Sonos to go have a listen for yourself (I'm well aware my hearing is *not* the best, and therefore my reviews may be less useful to others!!)

It depends what you need. The Zep sounds a better than the original Play 5 (in my opinion only of course!) and certainly goes a lot louder, so it would be better for big rooms. The Play 5 is a nice unit, though, and for moderate listening in an average room, I guess there would be little difference. It does sound as though the new one ups the ante considerably.

I recently bought a Sonos Play:3 to go in our bedroom. We have a PlayBar, Gen-2 Play:5, and Play:1 already.

I like the Play:1 - It offers a surprisingly "room filling" sound, far greater than its size might suggest. But it only has one set of speakers within, unlike all the other Sonos speakers which offer some sort of stereo.

So for the bedroom I thought I'd try a Play:3. Truth is, it doesn't really fill a room with music any better than a Play:1 can but because everyone wants a Play:1 at the moment, there's a few Play:3s going cheap on Ebay at the moment. I bought a nearly-new Play:3 for the price of a new Play:1.

Now, if Sonos would make a Connect:Amp with 2.1 channels, I have a project that might be screaming out for that. I'm currently bodging Chinese amplifier boards together with an LED PSU and a Chromecast - which actually sounds decent through a decent amp and speakers.

Oh, and pair of battery-powered headphones that you can join to the PlayBar but operate separately to the PlayBar (so I can listen to loud TV when everyone else is in bed).

Thanks chaps - I'll go for a Play:5 for the lounge then and Play:1s elsewhere, I can't the,p think that the Play:3 will be getting the 2nd gen treatment in the not too distant future so I'll wait and see!

So just bought my first batch of sonos speakers, initially for the lounge/dining room. Playbar, sub, Play:5 and 2 x Play 1's.

Arrives Sunday, looking forward to it, hopefully will be worth it!

I have a question that those with a Sonos setup should be able to help me with...

I don't have a TV in the bedroom, but from time to time I will watch Netflix/iplayer etc on the iPad.
I will get a pair of play:1's for the bedroom.

Is there any way of using the iPad for Netflix/whatever and having the sound streamed through Sonos?
I have an AirPort Extreme that can connect to the soundbar in the lounge. Would that help me?

Memory is fading but iirc you will need to run a lengthy 3.5mm to your Play 5 Line In from your IPad and then use sonos controller to stream audio to your paired Play 1's. I may well be wrong.

ETA - yeah it works but audio was slightly patchy, maybe settles down after a few minutes??! My setup is wireless so might help to hardwire your 5 to router/Bridge/Boost, and maybe even unpair your 1's and just use a single.

Oh, above was with iPad Mini Netflix 3.5mm to a 5 then using Controller app to select LineIn >>>> paired Play1's in separate room.

Thanks for the response...

I guess it won't be working for me then... My play 5 will be in the lounge. I'd need a 50 meter long 3.5m cable 😬

Hoping there would be an easier way!
I'll have to stick to my old Bluetooth speakers/ AirPlay for the iPad streaming then.
Slightly annoying

Sounds like you need Chromecast for your particular requirement. You could cast to one connected to your Play:5 and have it Play through your Play:1s but beware - there might be a delay / syncing issues.

You can do the same with an Apple TV or Airport Express plugged into the Play 5 if you have either of them already.

Enjoy them, I know those that I supplied to PHers here have, guessing by the number of time some of them keep coming back for more!

So it's here, and set up. Very happy. In fact went out and bought two more play 1's for the bedroom yesterday too.

I have set up the lounge as a 5:1 surround. And this initially gave me a couple of probs when it came to the music side of it, I couldn't get the volume I wanted out of the rear Play 1's. Removing the 5:1 setup and leaving them as individually controlled speakers - playbar, sub, and stereo paired Play 1's gives far better control for the music but then compromises the TV/Movies with the loss of 5:1.
The sort-of-solution for me has been to leave the 5:1 setup and change the rear speaker volume to max in settings.

Is there an easier way of setting up the 5:1 to also be customisable from the music side?

The gen 2 play 5 is a very nice sounding bit of kit too.

I've found that if you set the rears to FULL on music it's fine (although we have 5s, not 1s)

Yea that's what I resorted too, it's very good, just unfortunate you can't have individual control over the 5:1 paired group.
