I'm looking for a new telly for the living room for less than £1k. Is there anything better than the new Sony W815?

Cheers

We've just had the W829 and it is a stunning bit of kit. Picture quality is jaw dropping, sound quality is pretty good too.

I think the best way to sum up how impressive it is, a friend came round for a look, after 2 minutes was on Amazon, then 10 minutes later his delivery was arranged for the day after.

Think I paid £890 for it with a 5 year warranty from the Sony Centre in Wolverhampton. It replaced a 6 year old 37" LG, and I really am struggling to fault it.

I've got my 55w905 all set up now smile, fantastic looking picture.

Bought it 3 weeks ago in Costco for 999 + vat.

I've been watching MOTD just now, it was like being there the picture was so clear. biggrin

£1249 is a good price, the cheapest on line when I bought mine was £1350. Costco were £1200 which is why I took it double quick.

However, the W905 has been superceded by the W955 so stock is limited and being cleared out. So there may not be unlimited numbers of the W905 available before they are all gone, especially as the reviews of the W955 seem to suggest it's not as good as the W905 it replaces.

So if you can find a W905 for these prices it's worth snapping up, quick! smile

You had any thoughts on the 'smart' functions. The only thing I've really tried and been disappointed with so far is the net browser, it's shocking, it won't even load Sony's own home page!

But the TV menus are great... I've rearranged everything to work via the TV rather than my AV amp. Before, everything switched via the amp and the old Sony TV was a dumb monitor. Now, everything plugs and switches via the TV and the AV amp has become nothing more than a sound system slave to the TV. So much easier to use this way.

Had a mate and his missus round this evening. He's been trying to persuade his missus it's time to upgrade his old 46" Sony Bravia. We sat and watched 15 mins of MOTD and then 5 mins of Hobbit 2 in 3D. He's desperate, but she's not having it! Poor sod! biggrin

I've just ordered the 55w905 from Currys to replace my 3 year old 46" Samsung. At that price it seems a Billy bargain given the reviews. It's delivered on Friday so I'll update with my amateur opinion then.

Just a bit of an update, our new W815 was delivered yesterday and it's fantastic, decades ahead of our our Panasonic Plasma in picture clarity and colour. Function wise, we're still finding our way around.......

The basic sound quality is a little weak but I take it all these modern TVs are designed to be used with a sound bar. We've matched the Sony with an Orbit Sound soundbar with separate sub which sounds huge for film and music TV, but lacks some depth for normal programmes. Maybe I just need to play with the settings.

Quick question, to allow me to use the record function on the Sony, do I need a HDR recorder / receiver, or a separate HDD like you'd use to back up a computer. My old one won't plug into the USB HDD REC outlet?

Cheers

W829 is meant to be the best TV in Sony's range this year, beating their 9 series set hands down.

W905 is on offer at JL for £999 if you can live with 46".

However, you are into 50" GT60 money at a grand, that would be my choice.

My 905 turned up yesterday. Took a while to get the picture how I like it, using various suggestions for setups around the web, but I'm really pleased with it. The picture is absolutely stunning. It's my first 3D TV too and using a 3D Bluray playing through my PS3 was particularly impressive. It's a lot of telly for £1200.
