Any suggestions on how to sort out my speakers in the car please.

I am running a Blaupunkt Helsinki coupled to a pair of Fli 6" 3 way coaxial speakers rated at 70RMS and 210 peak watts, mounted in the plastic housing behind the seats in a VX220.

When I wind up the volume I am getting a resonance from the speakers that is annoying and detracting from what is usually a quality sound. Being the VX220 space is limited so I don't have room to install loads more speakers and I would rather not have an amp. Any ideas?

Thanks for the reply, you can see in the photo below they are almost in a sealed housing your suggestions make sense. Cheers

Hello Mate. smile I had a search on the installed speakers and it's maybe just a question of upgrading for something a little better quality. There are various 6" replacements that you could try and if ordered on line then you could return them if not satisfied (maybe get someone else to fit them so they don't get butchered wink ).

Basic stuff is to make sure that the existing are properly fitted to the bulkhead as if the mounting screws are a little loose then vibrations and resonance can occur especially at higher volumes. You could perhaps mount them on some of the self adhesive draft excluder type foam to help dampen any unwanted vibrations.

Replacement speakers may be more efficient than the existing ones so you could get more acoustic output for the same wattage input (though not guaranteed it depends on what you buy).

Have a look on this page see if there is anything you fancy (I was thinking maybe the Alpine SPG-13C2 at £42 or maybe the SPG-50 at £95 depending on how flush you're feeling:

Might be worth seeing what other VX owners have installed in their cars and maybe having a listen?

This reminds me I still haven't put the code in my car stereo since the battery went flat earlier this year. paperbag Having said that the car plays a nice enough tune on it's own. smile

I think from what has been said by you and Toxic it could be the housing that could be the cause. The plastic that holds the speakers is a bit flimsy and for the life of me I can't remember what was behind them in the way of padding/insulation when I took out the OEM Blaupunkt speakers. These speakers were installed in both of the kids cars with a decent sound quality which is why I picked them for the VX.
I'll see if I can get them more solidly mounted with maybe a brace back to the rear fire wall. As you know my cars have a tendancey to rattle themselves apart so it might be as simple as the screws slackening. so might not be necessary to change speakers.

I'm kicking myself that I didn't go for an Alpine set up like I had in the old car the quality of that set up was probably as good as I could get in the VX considering the bare metal chassis and lack of sound deadening & insulation. biggrin

Get yours working again, you could be listening to the results of that drum kit of yours music

One idea might be to see if you could stuff a couple of pillows behind the panel (rather than itchy loft insulation). I bought a couple of cheap ones from Asda just to stuff inside a subwoofer I built which worked well for about £5.

I don't think it would be fair to subject other people to my drum playing via the car's speakers. wink The kit seems to have reappeared in the living room though. whistle
