Hi All,

I have a Marantz amp and CD player (6000 series) which I'm very fond of.

Slight impulse purchase on a Sony W829 and saw phono outputs on the back so assumed I could connect via phono to my amp but can't get it working.

Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Is that the phone sockets labelled "component in"?

I originally tried the red and white connectors on the left that have an L and R under them but now tried all combinations and nothing works. Also tried going into settings and changing to speakers but then I get no sound on the TV either. Hmmm

I'm sorry, I was being too subtle. The sockets are labelled "in" because they are for playing sound through the tv speakers. They are not an "out" connection.

As pointed out above, the optical SPDIF socket is labelled "out"

Is it better to go longer on the optical or phono lead i.e. which type suffers the most loss? I need to go 5 metres. Cheers

Thank you and forgive my stupid questions, I'm completely out of date with hi-fi/audio tech.

So I'm set for a 4m optical (assume this is like hdmi so no point spending lots) and 1m phono (have a few QED's spare). Having a 'Google review' on what hi-fi for DAC converters has brought up all sorts of expensive boxes.

Any suggestions for best sound and smallest device as don't want to add another stack.

The suggested one on Amazon above has some reviews noting high pitched noises.

Thanks again

More searching and it appears I need one that can play HD TV - apparently some go into silent mode.

Also, a powered one is of preference as to not need to have a 4m usb cable...

Starting to think I should just get an AV amp

Resolved - went to Richer Sounds and asked for help.

Have spent <£70 and have a CYP AUD3-192, a cambridge audio optical lead and a QED phono lead. The DAC has mains power so don't have to find an extra long USB lead. It also works fine with HD. Sound is good, not as good as CD to amp, but very good for the price. Timing with visual and audio is spot on and no noises when the TV is off if I leave the amp on.

:-)

A headphone/minijack-to-phono lead would work. Richer Sounds could have sold you a decent one for £10.
Not as good sound quality I'm lead to believe from what hi-fi forum, AV forum etc

You appear infinitely more disciplined than I. I went into Richer Sounds with exactly the same problem (although Iwas connecting up to a 90's Sony Midi system rather than separates), and came out with a Yamaha AV Amp.....

About 150 more than I wanted to spend, and it's wrecked my Sony collection under the telly, but damn, does it sound good. That's only using it as a glorified Stereo amp too, I'm pretty sure with more speakers it would be incredible.
