I bought a Toshiba 40 inch telly on 08/12/2012 and the top of the picture has gone all grain, probably the top third, suspect the panel is
knackered, obviously not worth repairing but I am really annoyed that it hasn't even lasted two years, someone at work mentioned some EU legislation about stuff being of merchantable quality for a reasonable time, is it worth taking it up with Toshiba or just cut my losses ?

This is the second Toshiba I have bought, bough a Samsung earlier this year, wont be buying another Toshiba based on this !

You don't have a contract with Toshiba. If you're going to take it up with anyone it should be whoever you bought it from. After more than 6 months from date of purchase, though, you're going to have a bit of a battle on your hands to prove that it's an inherent fault/manufacturing defect. (6 months is the default cut-off for claims that a fault was present at the time of purchase).

Any warranty on it ? (from either retailer or Toshiba - check manuals etc., you might be surprised).

I had a similar issue with a TV a while ago. It's rarely the 'panel' itself - more often than not it's one of the electronic board 'cards' plugged into the unit inside.

I seem to remember it was called something like a 'Y sustain board' or something? Anyway, I managed to find one on Ebay for about £50 and replace it myself.

Definitley worth doing a bit of detective work.

You need to get on to the reseller you purchased it from, who was it? You need to read up on the Sale Of Goods Act, have a look here

http://www.which.co.uk/consumer-rights/regulation/...

But, as already said, there may be an extended warranty on the TV, check your receipt and the manufacturers website.

We've had Toshiba TV's since 1989. When we upgrade we give them away to friends/family. All of them are still working, even the 21" CRT we had in our first flat in 1988. It's now in my Mums bedroom.

Check out the EU 2 year rule.

And then realise that SoGA rights exceed the EU directive's requirements.

Toshiba contacted me and asked me to do a Reset, made no difference as expected so emailed them back and waiting for a response.

I suspect they will tell me to buzz off but I will see what happens, I really would be put out at spending £500 for less than two years use.

Will check out the EU link, a mate at work mentioned this.

As anticipated,

Thank you for your recent reply.

As you’ve performed a reset on the unit but the problem still persists. This would indicate that the television has developed a panel fault which would require a repair. We’re so sorry for the inconvenience.

As your television is out of warranty, this means regretfully, we’re unable to provide a free repair for your unit. We’ve provided your nearest Toshiba Authorised Service Provider (ASP) who will provide you a quote for parts and labour. You can find their details below:

Again, who sold you the TV? Read the SOGA info I posted and contact them, they are responsible for supplying a product fit for purpose, they have not done so, a TV should work for more than a couple of years.

Currys want £95 to come and collect it, then they will determine whether its down to a manufacturing fault or something else, might cost £95 or it may cost the full price of the repair which would probably be more than the TV is worth, to be honest, its ok (when it works) but the Smart Functionality is a joke and I think I may as well cut my losses, a mate has a Samsung 40 inch spare he will let me have for £100 which sounds better than ending up with a potential bill that would buy a better tv new anyway.
