We had the same problem, no where for rears, kids running around etc, so went with wall mounted bose cubes, wires channelled into the walls, and a sub hidden behind the sofa. There are lovers and haters, but I find the sound incredible.
If you're willing to channel cables into the walls then there is any number of decent wall mounted speakers available, so not just limited to Bose.

KEF, MK and PMC all make wall mountable speakers that would give fantastic results (I have white MK S150T surrounds myself wall mounted). However, these and the Bose suggestion are probably above what the OP wanted to spend anyway, but if he's willing to run cables into the walls then I'd still say to go for the 5.1 over the sound bar option. Especially if the walls are 'dot and dab' plasterboard as it's really easy to thread a thin wire up behind the plasterboard as I've done for all my 7 speakers and a HDMI cable to a projector too.

I waited until we were decorating and getting the walls skimmed anyway, perfect time to do it, now speakers slightly above adult head height out of reach of kiddies, and not a wire to be seen. Other makes of wall mountables are probably as good if not better than bose, but with it being our main room, I was happy enough to pay a bit more.

The new Naim one released this month should be the best in the business.
