I'm currently sorting out getting my kitchen done which involves knocking a wall down between the dining room and kitchen. We are going to have a TV mounted on the far wall of the dining room and speakers mounted on the kitchen ceiling. I want to be able to repeat the sound from the TV into the kitchen speakers. So if the kitchen is noisy or someone in the dining room doesn't want to be disturbed too much, I can watch tv in the kitchen without cranking the volume all the way up.

I plan to have an amp mounted in the under stairs cupboard which powers the kitchen speakers and a panel in the kitchen to control source and volume. The problem I have is that the TV is mounted a fair distance from the under stairs cupboard (around a 12m cable run) and we will have an induction hob fitted which may induce buzz on any audio cables.

My thoughts were an optical toslink cable which wouldn't have any interference issues but at 12m is probably too far for optical plus finding a cable that long may be a problem.

The other option would be a copper wire which is prone to interference over a long run but would almost certainly manage 12m. Ideally I'd like a balanced audio cable but my tv and amp don't support that and I can't find a relatively cheap box which will do the conversion at each end.

Can anyone think (or have experience of) a way to send the audio from the TV to the amp successfully without interference being an issue?

Optical or digital co-ax (SPDIF) would have no problem with a 12 metre length

It all depends on what audio outputs your TV has.

For some reason I was under the impression that about 8-10m was the absolute limit for optical toslink cables. I think I'll just get both of those and run them to give me some options.

That was a little simpler than I though! Thanks!

Not sure if you've chosen the TV and amp yet but there's a good chance that optical will be fine over a 12m run. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TOSLINK. If you're prepared to 'risk' buying a 12.5m version of one of these http://www.amazon.co.uk/KabelDirekt-15m-Optical-To... a 'friendly' TV store may allow you to check out the quality of your chosen TVs optical out.

Well the idea is I'll move my current Samsung 40" into the dining room which will give me an excuse to buy a new tv for the living room. So I can test the link quite easily. Currently the tv and amp I will use are about 1m apart in the living room. I've managed to get this plan past SWMBO, I do t think she's twigged about the new tv yet though. Saying that I probably won't be able to afford a tv after the getting the kitchen my wife wants.

The 12m is a bit of a guess as I'm not sure how best to run the cable but 12.5m should give me enough usable slack at each end. I may buy the 15m one from amazon as that definitely will, test it, then swap it for the 12.5m if it doesn't work.

I assume optical toslink cable is fairly future proof; I'd rather not have to chase another wire in in a few years!
