Our old 40 inch Samsung has died, so its time for a new TV.

We recently extended our house so we have a 6mx6m living room and the 40 inch looks too small in the corner.

Does anyone else have a similar sized living room, and what size TV is about right? I want to get a good size for films, but don't want to dominate the room if possible.

I sit 5m's from a fifty inch tele, and it's fine. I'd up it to 55 inches next time. If I was another metre away, I'd go 60 inch.

It takes a few days to get used to the size jump but after that you'll be good. Get the sixty....

Our lounge is exactly 6x6 and our 65" VT65 is still too small if you sit around 5m away. The wife thought it was going to be too big but once in situ its surprising how it 'shrinks'. We now use a PJ with 100" screen to make the image fully immersive.

How far away is your seating likely to be?

I see someone below has said they sit 5M away from the TV. This seems to me to be a looong way away.

You could do what we did and knock up a template from cardboard and see how it looks size wise.

Cardboard template is a good idea, but it will look huge; your wife will think it's ridiculously huge; and when you take it out of the box after you've bought it you'll both think it's absolutely massive.

But then after a couple of weeks of watching it you'll both agree that it's a good size, and could even get away with having a bigger one.

So li looks like the 60 inch is a winner!

We have the sofas down two walls, with the TV in the opposite corner. Sitting at the end of the sofa can put you over 6m away.

We had already thought of the cardboard temple, but it's real world experience I wanted to hear. A 50% jump in size will always look big initially.

60" is too small for that room! Seriously if you want to appreciate the picture quality of a HD source you'd want to be 10ft max from a screen that size. I think the new 84" screens will be perfect biggrin

I've got a 65" screen in my study and sit 4m away from it and that feels about right.

Please tell me you're not feeding those 802s with an AV amp!

Actually the Denon amp is superb (probably the last GREAT amp section on an AV receiver - along with the Yam Z11) and could drive the 802's reasonably well with front L/C/R all bi-amped using 6 of the 10 channel, but no I have a Meridian 559 running front L/R to get the best out of them currently - prev Krell FPB600 - and soon to be a Classe CA5300 I just agreed a deal on and collect this coming Saturday cool

That's ok then wink

OT, but why the move from Krell to Meridian? Never heard the 559 but I've listened to a few 557's and while they're excellent amps the Krell (and particularly the earlier KSA or KMA monos) were stupendous!

Classe always seemed to be paired with B&W (I understand B&w were the classe distributors in the UK) - have you demo'd them together?

The 559 has pretty much nothing in common with the 557 apart from the two first digits. The 559 amp modules are now used in Meridians top active speakers to give an ideal of how good they are - I have three 557's running Center and rear l/r as it happens. The Krell was awesome for bass grip and drive - it would be at 1200w into 4 ohms! But not an ideal match to the 802's as both tend towards brightness, so the silkier 559 works really well.

Yes B&W own Classe, and have designed the 800 series using those amps, so the CA5300 is a perfect match and I've been coveting one for the last few years (after hearing them together many times), but wife wasn't having the £7950 price ;( - but just got a great deal on a nearly new one so chuffed!

Very nice - same as me! 802s HTM1 and FPM6s side and rear. Black ash too, even the original ones like you.

It actually makes the TV look smallish!

For the benefit of the OP though, in that size room, you'll get used to 65 inch.

To start with it looks a bit strange. 8 years ago when we had our 63 inch fitted to the wall, the youngish installer asked if he could take a photo with him in to show his mates. That was a 5 by 5 room. Now that size is pretty much commonplace.

I've decided to go for the 60 inch Samsung UE60U7000.

I took my wife to currys tonight thinking that she would hate it, but I showed her all the sets I was considering and she wanted the largest TV available for our budget smile

Congrats! I'll look forward to the upcoming "What should I upgrade my 60 inch TV to as it seems too small for my room after living it with for a few months" thread biggrin

What she may be about to discover is that they look a lot smaller in the shop biggrin

15 years ago that installer would have been me. We had the first Philips displays when they were the only ones. At 42 inch they seemed huge. The only TVs we had bigger were the rear projections that the customers often had to knock down walls for. Then Panasonic joined the market with the 50" and I was excited!

I now have a 58" and it is a comfortable size
