Blu ray player decoding from external sources?
Discussion
Hi guys,
I have a roksan kandy stereo amp & matching 3 channel amp and recently ditched a DVD player with 5.1 analogue outputs. I've a new flat screen with hdmi outputs only and will get a blu ray player soon.
I want to keep my amps as I have trialled latest Sony av amps for ease of connectivity and features but wasn't impressed at all with the sound quality. So....if a blu ray player has hdmi inputs can the internal decoding be used from a TV feed which I can use with my current amps with 5.1 outputs?
Thanks

Yes, something like the Oppo 105 can do exactly this, I believe the 105 has 2 HDMI inputs but 1 of them is on the front so not a particularly tidy solution if you use both.
I presume your RK stereo amp is one of the newer ones that have an AV bypass mode? Otherwise its not going to be particularly convenient to use. I remember in the dim and distant past using a stereo amp to power the front 2 speakers with an AV amp powering the rest, because I didn't have the bypass function I had to turn the stereo amp right up to use for AV and nearly blew my speakers a few times when switching to stereo use.
Would it not make more sense to get an AV processor/preamp instead of an expensive BD player to do this? Even an AV amp with full preouts would do the job.
