My folks are looking for a good value 40 ish inch tv, it doesn't need to be 3d or 4k, they just watch regular telly. I'm in the states so can't help be hands on so over to the PH massive for help!

Main question is do they want a smart TV or not as that can add £100 to the price. I like LG kit so there's this non-smart one @ £299

http://www.richersounds.com/product/tv---all/lg/42...

or this smart one at £379

Apart from the fact that this one http://www.tesco.com/direct/samsung-ue40h5030-40-i... is £10 dearer, is there any advantage? I'm guessing as the numbers are 5000 and 5030 that the 5030 is newer but same spec?

This is one of the best LCDs ever made imho....

http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/tv-dvd-blu-ray/televi...

It is backlit rather than edge lit so you get a uniform backlight across the screen, meaning no annoying brighter areas in dark scenes.

I have the W905 which was their top of the line set last year and this is nearly as good.

Still no where near a plasma, either of them, but damed sight better than the edge lit led sets.

Useful thread as I'm also TV shopping. To go for a smart TV or not? I think probably not as I don't see much need to catch up on stuff missed.

Smart TV isn't worth it, you are better off buying a separate smart box/blu ray with smart functionality. A Now TV box isn't great, but it's £10 and has iplayer, 4od and itv on demand.

That said, the smart models tend to be better TVs anyway.

I'm not sure, I have always had a smart box, but it was only when getting the Sony that I started using Netflix and Youtube properly.

SONY BRAVIA KDL40W605 Smart 40" LED TV £429

http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/tv-dvd-blu-ray/televi...

Available elsewhere cheaper.

It really is a cracking set, looses some of the super slim styling for picture quality. Well worth it.

I have always have Pioneer Kuros and Panny pro plasma panels, but can happily watch everything on this.

The best sub £1000 LCD on the market at the moment imho, and only around £550 for the 48".

Maake sure it is the w605B model if searching for prices, there was a W600 before, no where near as good.

I am sure they all will be now, as this has been out a year.

Review..

Seems to be well reviewed as a 'budget' smart tv.
I too have ordered one - hoping it lives up to expectations.

Also, with the picture settings I would do the following, this is from memory, so ask if I have missed anything.

Picture Mode: Cinema 1
Backlight: 10
Contrast: 97
Brightness: 51
Colour: 47
Hue: G +1
Colour Temp: Warm 1
Sharpness: 50 (30 is the point at which the TV does not add any artificial sharpness but I prefer a slighty sharpened picture on this TV)
Noise Reduction: Off
MPEG NR: Off
Dot NR: Off
Film Mode: Auto

Gamma: -2

White Balance:
R-Gain 0
G-Gain 0
B-Gain -2
R-Bias 0
G-Bias 0
B-Bias -1

Then in the Eco menu turn the light sensor on.
It gets it bang on in raged to ambient room light, the purists say never have it on and leave the backlight on around 4, but this is too dark during the day and loose some pop even at night.
I have taken measurements with it on and off.

Everything else should be off.

Any recommendations for a sound bar to suit, preferably wireless?
I may not need one, but the reviews suggest sound's a weak point of the 605B.

I have a small sub, an older Rel bought off eBay for £60, plugged into mine.

I then set the audio out to variable and set the sub volume to match the TV.

This gives a superb all round sound that people are stunned by when they hear it, also keeps it looking really neat.

I had a big Yamaha YSP one, the £1200 version before and that is now gone.

If you have a sub elsewhere give it a try before slashing more money.

In fact, I think I have the audio out set to headphone on the HX923 and there is a dedicated sub out on the W605B.

Have a look when you get it, I also have a 503XE which is a bit older, so get confused how each was set up without looking. But it works really well.

You need to set the sub to allow up to 120z, so quite high in the frequency range, then slowly up the gain on it so until you can hear it, then knock it back a smidge, you really want to know it is missing when you turn it off rather than hear it, if that makes sense?

I have had to refuse mine from Pixmania.

One thing I didn't cotton on to it being imported from France is that the HD channels wouldn't work (DVB rather than UK spec DVB T2) and apparently some of the smart features wouldn't work also. There is a disclaimer on the site but I missed it.

see here: http://www.pixmania.co.uk/opcompatibilitetv-30217-...

Shame as it was a bargainlicious price frown

This: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sony-KDL42W705B-42-inch-Wi...

is advertised at £649 on Amazon though if anyone has thoughts or experience of them?

Cheers,

That is annoying.

What about buying from Currys? £399 there.

The 705 is a step back in pic quality, edge lit LED and not as good.
