Little out of my depth, looking for a bit of advice.

At the moment I have a really old (Vista) PC behind my tv to play iPlayer/4OD etc and also to watch avi movies on (via USB)

There's a VGA cable connection to my tele and a 3.5mm from the PC headphone jack into my old Rotel amp. The amp is only used for this purpose as I have Sonos in the rest of the house. It's all getting a bit knackered and clunky though, and the sound quality has deteriorated over time as things wear out.

Wondering whether Roku 3 will replace this lot, anyone have any experience with it? Can I play my own movies via the USB port on it? Anything else I should consider as an alternative?

Thanks

Edit - or perhaps a smart DVD player?

Just bought a Roku3 (found this thread when searching)

Very very impressed

I wanted set top box to play Iplayer and 4Od, as well as music from my external HD, which is 200gb of ITunes music

Works very well, Iphone remote app is great

Apps work great , can stream music off hard drive easy

Only bugbear was being forced to add a credit card when I set it up, but I un registered the card once I was up and running, some of the apps could have extra features, but I'm sure these will come in time

Youtube app is great, especially when paired with your phone so you find the video you want and send it to the TV

Its good being able to send music, vids and pictures to the TV from my Iphone

There are cheaper options, but I wanted the USB input and I want a polished tested product not a Chinese shed special

Tempted to try some of the oddball TV channels, anyone else have any apps/channels suggestions?

A Roku won't play AVI directly.

You can have them transcoded using Plex, but it might be more faffing than you want to do. Apart from that I'm a big fan of the Roku range.

My Roku Streaming Stick has a YouTube app, which works. No need to mess about with multiple devices.
