We're finally getting this tv wall mounted (only been 18 months sat in the box upstairs!!)

Samsung UE40ES6710
http://www.electronicworldtv.co.uk/40-samsung-ue40...

Also have a BluRay surround sound system to go with it, but not sure what other wires would be worth routing while the guys here sorting it out?

Here's the BluRay player, SAMSUNG HT-ES6600
http://www.whathifi.com/samsung/ht-es6600/overview

I'd like surround sound with our sky hd box so I'm guessing I connect an optical cable from the sky box to the bluray player? Or does this go from sky box to tv?

What other wires would be worth routing here as it's something we want to really fit & forget? What's the red/white/yellow RCA type cables used for?

Was thinking an additional HDMI as there's the extra slot, maybe a USB cable for the iPod and my be another usb cable for my seagate satelite media player (if it even connects?...no idea if it'll work with the tv?)

Another wires worth getting?

Firstly, this is an entertainment system not a surround sound system, it has 2.1 audio not 5.1 and I can't see anything in the literature to suggest it provides some kind of fudged surround effect. If you wanted surround then looks like you have a problem, if not then it'll still poo all over the TVs speakers so from that perspective it'll be fine.

It's pretty basic and has limited inputs but here's what you run, oh, the red/white/yellow connections are the analogue audio input (red/white) and composite video output (yellow). You'll be using HDMI so ignore the yellow connection.

Now you have a bit of decision to make. There is only one optical input on your Blu-ray so the ideal solution is to have all your video devices connected to the TV via HDMI with the TV connected to the optical input on the Blu-ray, that way all audio can be played through your speaker system. Problem is the TV only outputs multi-channel digital audio from its built-in tuner, auxiliary source such as Sky will have audio down mixed to stereo. Whilst your system is only 2.1 it is compatible with digital surround formats so to take advantage of this from Sky you really need to connect the Sky receiver to the Blu-Ray via optical but this rules out audio from any other connected device and the TV it's self.

If you only plan to watch DVD/Blu-Ray and Sky then connect the Blu-Ray and Sky to the TV via HDMI (two cables), and the Sky box to the Blu-Ray via optical. If you want to add devices like Apple TV then you'll have to sacrifice digital audio and connect the TV to the optical input instead (each video source needs HDMI to the TV). I suppose if you run optical to the TV anyway you can always swap connections based on what you're doing but it's a bit of a faff.

Your seagate media player is not a player it's a storage device with Wi-Fi (if I have the right one) so you can't link it to the Blu-ray. Use an iPod instead.

With all due respect, next time you buy an audio system for use with a TV buy something with a bit of flexibility, the reason you didn't get any replies is probably due to the fact it takes ^^this^^ long to respond when kit lacks usual functionality...

EDIT: forgot to mention if you're wall mounting a TV and chasing cables run pretty much everything you can without creating problems. If you had a proper AV receiver you'd only need one HDMI, but as you don't I'd run an HDMI for every input just in case, that, or use an HDMI switch and one cable. Remember the antenna connection as well.

Thanks for the reply, I'll try what you've suggested smile

Yeah it's just a pretty basic system but wanted the speakers to work with sky aswel as the bluray and wasn't sure what extra wires we'd need/to go where.

So basically need to route 3 hdmi's (but one won't be used yet) antennae and the red/white audio cables through the wall then a short optical cable from bluray to sky box and that should be it?

Annoying thing here is I had some decent surround sound kit plus free standing warfedale's and a big Yamaha amp I wanted to set up last year but she wouldn't have it so they got sold for peanuts and we bought this thing instead!! Looks nice but can't see it being as good as the old one frown

You won't need the analogue stereo connection (red / white) cable, run an optical cable instead as you may want to use it some time. Otherwise yes, that's right.

All done smile

Just routed the 3 hdmi's & cat 5 cable under the skirting board (tight fit!!!) then the optical cable between the Blu Ray & sky box and it's working great.
