Twice now I've had faults with Blue Ray players, a Samsung, now a Sony, neither have lasted 12 months. The Sony less than 4... !
What's going on, are these things prone to failing?
Faults are discs skipping, the feed to the TV just being lost completely, flickering and blueing out. It's just crap!.

Not heard of any similar problems. I've had Samsung, Sony and Pioneer bluray players since bluray came out. All have been totally reliable. Guess you were just unlucky

It is surprising the number of "spare/repair" blu-ray players on eBay that seem to only play DVDs and not blu-ray discs. So that part of the technology seems a bit more delicate.

I've only had three over the years, sold the first Sony one after two years working fine, gave my second Sony one to my eldest and it's still working fine after three-four years. The current Oppo is about three years old and working fine.

I do take the trouble to clean any discs before putting them in the player (I mostly rent from Lovefilm and some discs come in a terrible state), but I've never used a cleaner disc in any of them. I think you must just have been unlucky.

Also check your mains supply, invest £50 in a conditioner, it does help.

I did wonder about the mains supply, one of them died around about the time we had a power cut. But I have never had any other electronic items fail like this. Perhaps the build quality of new kit is getting worse and less protection is built in?.

For £30 invest in a Tacima 6 way conditioner. It will look after your TV, blu ray, sound bar, Sky Box etc and will improve the picture too.

My Sony BR is an early one, bought probably something like 6 years ago now and running perfectly.

In fact seemingly flawless reliability (touch wood) is the main reason I keep buying their gear. I don't have a conditioner but do have everything plugged into a really good surge protector and plenty of space around to ensure nothing gets too toasty.

I've done a software up date and it seems to be working now, will see how it develops.

I've had the same Samsung BluRay player for about 4 years now, apart from being slow to load up a film, it has been faultless.

We have three players, plus three blu-ray drives in PCS and none has gone wrong. My only complaint is that the oldest player, a high-end Denon one is very slow to load discs.

Had no issues. Still got an ancient Sony S550 and big phatt 60GB PS3, both still play BD's fine.
Could just be bad luck. Could be cost cutting on quality on newer cheaper models.

Worth spending a bit more for a high quality player imo - so basically an Oppp wink - Had a Panasonic player for a while and it was awful, slow to load and fussy about discs. The Oppo 105 on the other hand plays everything without a hitch. Also doubles up as an excellent music CD spinner as well.
