It's not a pre amp, it's more of a connection box with a motorised pot, it's really useful, I have used one to mix and match stuff.

I presume the OP is 'having a go' at me because I cited the kit I use for headphone and portable listening - rather than only *exactly* what I was listening to *at that moment*.

I know it's not a pre amp, they're (usually) just a pot (or motorised pot, as you say) with inputs and outputs, and some have remote control and selectable inputs.

But it is an oxymoron, as it does not amplify, it actually attenuates.

Not forgetting that a lot of them also roll off the high frequencies (depending on volume setting / cable capacitance) - and at best will not only give you variable volume, but variable frequency response too.

Not accurate by any stretch of the imagination.
