Looking to replace an ageing LG 32 in a couple of months (back end of April) so have decided to start looking about and getting an idea of what's available.

Needs to be smart, preferably playing any format I throw at it, Full HD a must, 4k if it'll do it without sacrificing other components.
More HDMI inputs than you can shake a stick at.
etc, etc, etc..

Any recommendations, avoids, pitfalls?

TIA..

Depending on your brand preference, the answer is Samsung, Panasonic or Sony.

Can't go wrong with a Samsung.

I'm in the market for a new 40" at the moment. I would typically go Samsung but have to say that Sony KDL-40W605B at £450 looks worthy of consideration.

Edit - looks like it's under £400 now.

I cant get on FB to PM you until later, so here's the drivel you'd have received later Sir Slink.
Don't worry about 4K, as it isn't worth it for the screen size you're after, plus the budget wont allow for it, and TV's still don't achieve DCI and wont display HDR content at that price point for a long time.

Smart platforms are quite similar at this point, the pick of the bunch being LG's WebOS which is superb. Samsung's 2015 range has caught up in this area but OS 2.0 seems to be still leading the field. At this price point, HDMI inputs and the like tend to be the same across the board. I've not seen any reviews yet, but the Sony lineup this year looks good, especially with the Android TV smart system and YouView.

I'll dig out some model numbers and PM you tonight if you're about thumbup

Cheers JB..

Size wise, I'm guessing I'm somewhere between 40 & 50, all workable in the space I have.

I haven't checked all the available outlets (only went with John Lewis as they're good on guarantees and the website is easy to navigate), some candidates below:

LG 42LB730 - £599 John Lewis linky
Review of the LB700 (last year's equivalent) AVF Review

Samsung UE48H6700 - £649 John Lewis linky
Review here

They're the 2 that standout for me around the £600 mark. I'd expect the Sammy to drop in price once the 2015 displays start to appear.
Regarding reviews, AVF would be the place to go - the likes of What HiFi review things in a strange manner (HDMI cables for example). The CIE charts are particularly useful in showing what's actually going on with the picture (Slink...it's a bit like a Racepak smile ).

Note that they're both 1080p. 4K at this price point will be ropey, have poor motion handling and poor upscaling ability, which at this point, is the primary use of the tech since native content is still minimal. There's another 4K thread a while back (several infact), that cover these aspects.

Lastly, a good piece regarding buying in store generally Here smile

Thanks Jon - that link made me change to the Samsung H5500 and viewing it in-store this morning confirmed it was exactly what I needed.. I've just fetched one from John Lewis - £379 with a 5 year guarantee. Very very happy.

They were out of stock of Blu Ray players so that's next smile

Fully aware but old TV dead. This will eventually be a second TV so not bothered about latest and greatest.

I agree entirely was just making the point because you can start to hunt for 2014 models being reduced now so don't pay retail

Internet TV? We've got a Sony Bravia 28in recently and are very happy with it. BBC iplayer, Youtube plus much more at the push of a button. I think ours was about £500.

As has been said before, get yourself to a shop and have a play with an LG tv with WebOS. Completely different league compared to the offerings from Samsung and Panasonic.

I recently bought http://www.currys.co.uk/gbuk/tv-dvd-blu-ray/televi... after loads of research.

I couldn't be happier. Fantastic TV that I can't fault.

5 year warranty from currys and priced at £619.

If we were to shift the budget a touch, perhaps up to £850.....
