Hi all,

I have bought a new house (not new build) I am looking to put a TV and sonos soundbar above the fireplace, after it has been removed and a small unit to the left of the chimney breast where the Sky box, blu ray etc will be. The old owners had wallpaper everywhere so we are removing it and then replastering the walls, this gives me the opportunity to put new cables in the walls etc.

I have my electrician putting new sockets above the existing fireplace (amongst other jobs) where the TV will be hung, the question I have is do I simply put HDMI cables in the wall or is there a smarter solution. I have put a picture below so you guys can see the wall in question.

Any advice welcome as I am completely new to this and not sure where to start. Also, if anyone here is an installer who will be willing to travel to near Romford Essex to do the install, let me know.

It's best to allow for any changes that might be needed in the future - new or extra cables, replacing damaged cables, etc.
Bury some trunking or conduit in the walls, run the cables through that. Run a couple of lengths of strong twine too, so that you can pull new cables through at a later date. Use the biggest conduit that will fit, especially if there are bends. 40mm solvent weld waste pipe works well, but don't compromise the structural integrity of the wall. I'd be tempted to go straight into the side of the fireplace, up the breast, then out behind the TV, if possible. It'll save a lot of chasing out.

Get the spark to put a fused spur at socket level somewhere rather than a standard socket behind the TV.

It is beater, the set will mount closer to the wall, and you can power it down/isolate it/reset it without having to fanny about taking the TV down or reaching behind it.
