We have cancelled our Sky subscription and as such have one of the newer style black Sky+ HD boxes that is surplus to requirements.

My Mum & Dad have the same box in their living room, but in their bedroom have a much older white Sky+ box which is pretty naff and still runs the old style software on it.

If I give them my surplus new style box, is it a straight swap over? I presume it's just a case of swap out the boxes and put their viewing card in the new box?

The box is a straight swap but the viewing card may have a hissy fit if they aren't signed up for HD.

Similarly if they have multi room and want to cascade the old unit to another room the viewing card won't permit recording.

Connections wise it's a straight swap but you will need to contact sky to register the change of box ,i've just done this myself ,it's a free of charge changeover but may need a software update .

Is it still a straight swap if you have an old white box without sky plus or does this need an engineer to do some wiring from the dish?

You need a double lnb and shotgun cable , this gives you 2 coax connections into the sky+ box ( one for each channel you are recording /watching ) so it depends on what you have at the moment ,i suspect a new coax will be reqd .

If their white Sky+ box has both dish inputs connected to the dish then it'll be a straight swap. Then you may need to call Sky as the box will be registered under your name so it'll 'flag' if they try to add it to their account. Sky should be able to override it though.

He said it was an old white box , not a white sky+ box.

Just noticed that. Confusion abound!

Sky+, straight swap. Normal single input digibox will need an extra feed for full sky+ functionality. Sky+HD boxes can be configured for a single feed but you won't be able to record and watch different channels at the same time.

Very straightforward now, they'll just need to pair their viewing card with your box. Can be done online.
