I've a fairly elderly brown Technics (assume it's late 80s or very early 90s) amp and 30 band graphic EQ driving some Acoustic Solutions Richer Sounds speakers in my bedroom, a Pioneer AV amp in the lounge driving a Vibe (as in car audio!) 5:1 setup with 12" sub and Tannoy powered monitors in the study. None of it's the be all/end all, but it's all perfectly ample considering these days I mostly play MP3s or stream Spotify.

Guys - I don't care about sound quality of the DAC and line stage only. If it can't drive a pair of headphones properly what's the point in having that - does anyone honestly use theirs as an analogue source?
If it's really that good then in theory I won't hear any benefit when I plug in a Mojo later - would I be wasting my money on one?

I do care about the quality of the DAC and line stage and I don't care much about its ability to drive headphones. I've used 5s and 6s as analogue sources several times; certainly more often than I use my headphones.If it's really that good then in theory I won't hear any benefit when I plug in a Mojo later - would I be wasting my money on one?
The Mojo will, of course, sound better to you than the 6 on its own, you've not heard it yet but your previous posts, such as
"I'm sure partnered with the iPhone via USB it will be brilliant."
show textbook confirmation bias at work; you've already decided what the result will be.
The Mojo is a dedicated audio device made by a great company; it should sound better and I'm sure it will be every bit as good as you expect.
I'm trying to give some balance and certainly not suggesting an iPhone is a high end analogue line source.............. I've not heard a correctly configured iPhone sound woeful either.

I replaced my Technics hifi system with a Pioneer 5.1 home cinema thinking that without speakers the of dustbins it wouldn't be good enough only to find the sound was superb. I also remember buying brothers in arms just because it was one of the original CDs that had been state of the art re-mastered. I played a traditional CD (not MP3 compressed) via the Pioneer home cinema the other day and the sound really was amazing. The technology of separate head amps, power driven sub woofers, Dolby music 'modes' means that many of the top branded systems are so good now days unless you can buy new ears I don't think there is the demand for specialist systems like there was back in the 80's.

Confirmation bias or not, it sounds bloody brilliant. IE800 now actually sound like they should compared to using iPhone directly. I do agree with your point about sound quality and overall capability of the iPhone DAC and line stage but it really lacks the ability to drive a pair of phones. the mention of 'Brothers in Arms' a week ago I had the pleasure of going to the Dire straits experience gig at the Apex in Bury st Edmunds. What an evening! Stunning musicianship with two of the original band + other world class musicians collaborating. Incredible sound full of the original complexity perfectly performed.
My hifi killed itself.
A desire to listen to music caused me to buy various separate components over the years.
An interest in music itself developed which led to my learning to play an instrument.
The hifi got canned, and I now stream whatever I'm jamming along with via Spotify and play through (decent) headphones.
When I'm done playing, I just enjoy the silence.

I bought a FiiO E11 on FleeBay yesterday as a result of this thread. Cheap and cheerful but it's a good beginners amp. If it gets used then I might upgrade but I suspect it's one of those toys that I'll use for a day and forget about. mackie1 said:

I doubt you'll be disappointed - I'm very happy with mine and the versatility it provides being self-powered and interfacing with iOS devices means I have a very good sounding but discreet system for office / hotel / train use.Also handy to note it can output at line level only, should you did want to use it as a DAC and pre-amp with external amp/speakers.
I haven't driven bigger phones with it yet but when I get an adapter I'll be interested to try it with my HD800.
Ha, digitised portable listening is crap, period, streaming is rubbish. I recently listened to one of my old vinyl - David Sylvian "Secrets of the Beehive" LP. There are layers of sound that just need a decent system to bring it out, talking of which mine is about 12 years old not expensive at the time as it was mainly Richer Sounds returns.
Now consider those ipod/streaming devices/phone upgrades, I think vale or money a separate h-fi system just blows everything away. Yes I use my phone on occasion with Sinhesser head phones , but its just not the same.
