Needs to be able to link to my Samsung TVs and play movies, and link to my sonos for music. Everything is WiFi connected at present.

I've heard nothing but good things about Synology but never used them. I have a Netgear 104 with 12Tb of WD Red and run Plex to my Kuro and it's fine and does the job I need.
That's probably not much use to you as you have a Samsung and Sonos but it should be pretty easy nowadays with the smart devices you have.

Synology or QNAP. expensive but very stable.

There are cheaper options, but you nearly always hear bad stuff about them being flakey.

Do you need NAS or will USB storage do the job?

HP Microserver would be even better, but a lot more technical knowledge to set up.

I've been running a single bay Synology 24x7 for the past 4 years and has NEVER needed rebooting and is always available to every device tht can connect to it as soon as they get switched on.

Synology 415+ here and delighted with it. The old NAS (Buffalo LinkStation) had numerous restarts a week, wouldn't talk to all devices etc. so far. The Synology has been perfect!!

Run a pile of QNAPs at work, all with WD Red drives. Very impressed with them!

I have 3TB of films and music, so will need at least 10TB for backup and expansion I should think.

Any models I should go for in the Synology/QNAP range?

I work in IT and QNAP have a very marmite reputation to be polite smile

Synology I simply don't hear bad things about, they cost a few quid more but any issues seem stem from the choice of drives used.

Make sure you use RAID10 or RAID6 and make sure you have an external backup if you value the data.

you will probably have to go for the 4 bay one (DS415)(circa £400). I think all consumer synology ones are limited to 6TB drives, but that may have changed. Its not gonna be cheap you will be talking over a grand (if not more) for a 4 bay filled with 4x6TB drives depending on drive spec. It may be more cost effective to get cloud storage option for all but your most immediate/regular/timely needs.

The other option would be external drive thru USB3 plugged into the Synology for additional storage.

Remember RAID is NOT backup, it's resilience.

I hate to think how long it would take to recover a full RAID array if a 6TB drive failed. Perhaps those who advocate it can enlighten us.

Work off around 24hr per 2TB - we had a bunch of 2TB drives fail in a Synology we use for archival stuff and those are the rebuild times using SHR2 (so essentially RAID6).

I've got a Synology DS414J currently running 2x WD Red 6TB drives (with space for another two 6TB drives in the future).

Seriously impressed with the Synology - excellent software, very stable and handles everything I throw at it.

Another vote for Synology - I have the DS214Play with WD Red drives, and it works flawlessly with my Samsung TV and PLEX for playing movies, TV shows etc.

Another vote for Synology here too. I have a rather more lowly DS211j with two WD RED 2TB disks. It's been flawless since day 1.

If you have some technical ability the HP Microserver is better value than a NAS IMHO. I have one with 20TB running UnRAID and it's perfect for Plex and Logitech Media Server.

If you are not that technical, just get a QNAP or Synology NAS but make sure it's at least a 2 bay version.

Oh, and don't use Wi-Fi if you can help it. Consider getting some Homeplugs.

I'm also on looking for a first NAS and narrowed it down to a Synology DS215j. Is the best disk option 2xWD reds or 2 dissimilar brands of the same capacity?

Bought a 215j with 8tb hard drives.

My modem is in the attic, can I connect to the router from downstairs using a powerline Ethernet plug?
