I don't disagree, but the software and internal hardware is very good. I use that 24x7 I used the box and bays once in 4 years. it happily sits on top of my subwoofer quietly going about its business. I ncan forgive the apparent lack of build quality for the brilliant stuff that matters.
You keep your hard drives on top of an electromagnetic speaker?
One that vibrates alot hehe.

not ideal, but its been running 24x7 for the past 4 years and has never been rebooted except when the cleaners sometime switch the plug socket off evry now and then.

Yeah but mate, either the magnet is going to pull all your data off the drives or the speaker will shake it off. There'll be bits and bytes all over the fking place

Not sure which sub Sparky uses but any competently designed sub shouldn't vibrate - a well designed sub is almost inert even when hitting lower than 20Hz at crazy volume.

Magnetism is another matter wink

If it's your first NAS you'll wonder what all the fuss is about - it just works, smoothly.

If you've had experience with some WD efforts you'll think it's a revelation.

Not my first - moving over from Buffalo Linkstations. The first one I bought several years ago (hosts my music) is still going strong. But the more recent purchases (a 2TB one and a 6TB one) have both died in the last 18 months. Which means I will have to re-rip all my films. frown

This time, I've bought enough space that I can back up my existing music NAS (which I might transfer to the Synology anyway), and the films and anything else I want to backup.

I think you'll like it - there's decent software included (you select and download whichever you need from the control panel).

The DSAudio app is one of the better music controllers out there but not as good as (paid for) Bubbleupnp - still, it might be of interest to you as a music listener and there's a great support forum out there too.

Thanks, but probably need to continue using SqueezeCenter. I use a Pronto TSU9600 as my remote which has controls squeezecenter directly.

Makes sense.

Squeeze centre comes pre-installed and I use it with an old Duet in the garage.

I already had the iPad and DSAudio looks and feels great so I stick with that for the main system.

Have fun.

Eta:

It comes with Logitech Media Server pre-installed not Squeezecentre although I'm sure it's simple to add it if required.

Bought a 215j with 8tb hard drives.

My modem is in the attic, can I connect to the router from downstairs using a powerline Ethernet plug?
Yes, it should work as long as the circuits are on the same consumer unit.
Doesn't have to be on the same consumer unit for homeplugs to work.

I've got a readynas duo, don't use it very often, it's pretty noisey and has failed to start up a few times. Thinking of replacing it with a synology as I understand they are quiet and also come with software for CCTV. Any recommendations for disks to go with them?

Only had an hour or two to play with my new NAS last night, but didn't have great success. Went through the config, gave it a server name and installed all the default apps. However, I absolutely could not get a network drive mapped to it for some reason.

During the setup it asked me to create a DSM ID which kept failing with unknown error, so it might be related to that - but I wouldn't expect to need that to map a network drive via a PC on the same LAN.

I've reset it back to defaults and will play around with it again today or tomorrow.

ETA : Drive mapping fixed. Stupid ZoneAlarm firewall - look in the log and it proudly shows all the traffic it's blocked from the IP address my NAS was using!

I'm impressed. Usually, copying a ripped bluray from my laptop to my old linkstation would take well over an hour. Now it takes about 10 minutes!

Even better - managed to coax my old linkstation NAS to life this morning, and even though it's flashing an error light it is connecting to the network now. So currently copying everything off it, which will save a lot of re-ripping (although will apparently take 20 hours). I suspect I could connect to the Synology with USB and copy quicker via the web interface but I'm surprised to find I don't own a standard USB cable - plus I'm not sure the nas will work again if I move it!
